SP2 booted like a turtle, SP3 boots like a slug.

Installed SP3 today, worked out minor annoyances like my VPN crashing every time I boot and no internet access whatsoever. But what I can't stand it that it now takes over 6 minutes for my system to load. Under SP2 it used to take 2:10, not fast but something I could live with. Guess I'll be Ghosting back my SP2 version. Really, I didn't have any issues I was aware of with SP2. I just figured it was best to have the latest updates. Hmm. Maybe not.

SP3 literally cut my boot time in half. Of course, I had done a clean install the same day, but this was even after reinstalling all my programs and then defragmenting. If you have your data files backed up, a clean install might be a good idea to try.

I've also find it takes longer to boot plus there is an extra Svchost.exe running. Anyone know what that is for?

This is not a real old install - it was clean and new on 3/19/02. But I have a lot of things installed. I think it would take me something like a couple of days to wipe (probably reformat the partition) and install from my Win2k SP2 CD, immediately update to SP3 and then install all my apps and utilities. Let me count everything in my Add/Remove Programs: 64 ! If I go that route I should probably wipe my applications partition too, I figure, and just reinstall everything. What would I gain? Well, I'd have the latest service pack, and can pride myself in being up to date. What tangible benefits beyond that? I don't know of any. Of course, I would Ghost before doing this. At the moment I think I'll just go back to SP2 and live with it at least for a while. Looks like some other stuff might be messed up. WTF?

From the looks of your RIG setup, running a Athlon on 300w PSU
with all those extras, I'm kinda surprised you get it to POST at all!

Well, it POSTs OK. I wouldn't think the PSU is part of the problem. Are you suggesting I buy another PSU?

Actually, YES.

Even though I rarely follow the norm, when AMD recommends a minimum
350W PSU with configuration's alot less than yours, an through many
experiences of my own, have become a Believer.

I have a PII 400 that I use for general everyday use.
Have had it for years. It has worked great, but over time had become sluggish and buggy.

The original PSU was a 230W (delivered a 150w total @+5v/+3v), which is more than adequate.

I had an old 300w PSU sitting around, so I installed it.
The sluggishness disappeared, little or no problems with anything.

With the amount of power drawn by Current CPU's and Video card, it could not hurt.

Mucho.

The additional SVCHOST is the Auto Update service which allows MS unrestricted access your systems configuration and data.

LOL, Lets see some proof of this BS.

Anyways, I see no change in my boot up time from SP2 - SP1. This was on my server which has had Win2k installed for probably 5 months (since my last ghost). No problems with it at all.

Also saw no problems on my machine at work. Not sure what your problem is, sounds like a conflict with a file in the new SP3 with something you had previously installed from another program that loads on boot? Just a guess.

Yeah, I'd say that's a good guess. I can try removing my VPN and disabling my Zonealarm firewall (it's configured, so I really don't want to remove it) and see if that speeds up the process. I kind of like Lilithtech's idea of an inadequate PSU. My CPU is an Athlon 1.2 pushed to 1.4. The PSU is approved for up to 1.3, but not a 1.4, so I'm definitely pushing it. And truly I do have a lot of things installed in the box.

If its the same box and hardware you had before updating to SP3 why would it just now show problems. I updated to SP3 with no difference on both my dual MP system and my P4 system with Advanced Server. There is likely as mentioned a conflict with something you added drivers for after SP2 or an ASPI layer conflict possibly. SP3 probably replaced some files that were overwritten by those updates.
