SP1

what does it do exactly? what are the benefits of having it? I have every windows update, except SP1, and the only reason I don't is because I remember reading a pcworld article once, that claims users who installed SP1 got a visable performance decrease, this true? What are the facts I need to know? thanks 🙂

When SP1 first came out many people resisted it because some noticed a small slow down. But that was a very long time ago now and I believe the vast majority have given in because of the fixes and that some things require sp1. The slowdown can probably only be seen in benchmarks so I don't think it is a problem.

I'm pretty sure I saw something about a security exploit which SP1 fixes. It was like, if you clicked a specific URL, your windows directory would be deleted.

There are several exploits fixed with SP1. And at least one that was fixed only in SP1 and not via another available patch. The slowdown mentioned was related to a specific patch, not SP1 (though if said patch was installed with SP1 there was a problem. The problem was the patch, not the SP). Unless you are using an illegal copy of XP (if you are, you should remedy that immediately) there is no reason whatsoever to not be using SP1.

Exactly.

OK, so my windows is completely legit, I don't have either of the mentioned patches (I got those from 2003's pcworld august edition) so I should do the SP?

edit: haha I dld the service pack, but it didnt even need to install, after closer examination of my program files list, i already have all the updates 😱 thanks anyway tho guys, I feel more knowledgable about telling other people this now. 🙂

Service packs are usually a collection of the updates released thus-far along with a few extras that might not have been released by themselves.

SP1 did have a bug which lenghtened program loading times but an update was posted to fix it. Also SP2 will include a fix for it.
