Are you out to lunch, or being really really really sarcastic, while yet pretending to be out to lunch?

Basically, SP1 has every patch and driver update for Windows XP in one single download. It also has other OS updates and ehancements. I know for a fact that IE6.0 has rcv'd some security enhancements as it prompts you with security risk prompts whenever you download a file from the net.

And the fact that you can slipstream it onto a current CD copy of XP makes it a must have for clean installs.

Ouch! That hurts LAUST. I've got 10 NW6 servers right now that all run flawlessly. I just installed iFolder2 today....it's pretty smooth. So.... :D

Ohh yeah, I was being sarcastic obviously above....but I was also on my lunch break then so the answer is..."a little bit of both". ;)

Yes, its definately worth it if you plan on doing a fresh install since it includes all updates and hotfixes for the OS and IE 6. I reformatted yesterday and installed SP1 right after, saved me a lot of Windows Update visits...

And also amends your license agreement so MS can circumvent your firewall at will and make changes to your rig behind the scenes. You can disable automatic updates to stop much of this but neverthess the "right" for MS to tinker beyond auto-updating still exists. You may or may not be concerned with this. Some info here.

I only saw the new feature that enables you to hide build-in MS apps and lets you automatically run others in their place ....

THAT is the ONLY new feature I have detected so far ....

(and new version of MS Messenger that finally works with the XP firewall on)

i always upgrade to the service packs ASAP.. there is a reason they release them... what's the pain in downloading it unless you have a 56K or something? i'd update.

Just installed it. The 50mb download went faster than expected. After rebooting my PC from installation, I got about 50 'Windows has recovered from a serious error' messages that almost refused to go away (you know, you click it, and the message immediatly pops back up). After one more restart, everything seems to be ok.

My friend started yelling at me over why I installed SP1. He said that installing it gives MS access to download and install software on your PC without you knowing it, even if you have auto update disabled. I think he's just being paranoid, but anyone else hear something about this?

i still havent seen much difference with win2k and sp3.

do they write out all the fixes and changes it actually does anywhere? they're not small files, so i'd have to assume they do a lot... i just dont see any of it.
