SP-2 problems

I installed SP-2 on a new system (Gigabyte K7 Triton, AMD 3200, 1 gig PC 3200, 160 gig SATA WD HD, Nvidia TI4600 video) and after installing SP-2, the hard drive activity light stays on continuously! Is there a fix for this problem, or will I have to remove the partition and reinstall the operating system ?

hey ya I've got this same problem, no clue as to what the cause is. Would be interested in a solution though.

In order to find out what process is writing or reading, open the task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete).
Select the "Processes" tab.
Click on "View", then, "Select Columns".
Select I/O Read Bytes and I/O Write Bytes, and click on OK.

Now, you can see which process is writing to or reading from the hard drive.

Hi Navid: Thanks for the helpful suggestion, appreciated. I followed your instructions and found that the file Isass.exe was making continuous reads, but I have been unable to find information on what Isass.exe is or what its function is in XP.

It deals with Network security, Net Logon, etc.

First, it's LSASS.EXE, not ISASS.EXE. It's Local Security Authority Service. It deals with local logon and application of local security policies.

Does booting into Safe Mode resolve the problem? Are you running both Windows Firewall and a 3rd party firewall such as ZoneAlarm? Open the new security center in control panel. If you have ZoneAlarm you should make sure Windws Firewall is off.

I'm checking this from work and not at my computer to check out LSASS but i'll assume for the sake of argument that it is the culprit. I am running Norton Corporate 8 antivirus and do no have the windows firewall enabled. Had the problme of constant read/write with the fire wall on and off. Do i need to let this program run? can i shut it off? if so how? what exactly does this program do? and why can't microshaft just make a simple secure OS that works? (don't awnser that last one i don't need a flame war.) anyway i'm tired of my HDD light being constantly on.

Thanks all

Hi Navid:

I am running the latest version of the free Zone Alarm, and I have, to the best of my ability, disabled the WinXP firewall. I am running Norton Antivirus, and it is up-to-date.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I am running Zone Alarm firewall, and I have (to the best of my ability) turned off the XP firewall, but I am never sure that I have disabled all instances of it.

you can just right click on the drive lets say its c: then uncheck Allow indexing servoce to index this
disk for fast searching.

Maby it will work maby not 🙂

Is the lsass.exe process suppose to have constant I/O Read/Writes? Is there a specific service that causes this?
