Anyone ever tried it?

www.soylent.com

I've heard about this over the years. Sounds intriguing as a supplement. Couldn't handle not eating solid food though.

33%/47%/20% C/F/P, which seems crazy to me. In a bad way.

What do you think?

I like the idea of a meal replacement, because half the time I never know what to make, so I end up ordering out or cobling some weird thing together. But I'd have trouble with the idea of it not being solid. I don't see how that could work, when I drink any kind of liquid I just have to pee 10 minutes later and it's gone. Would like to see them make some kind of meal replacement bar or something. Something with lot of fibre so it can actually stay in your system for a bit and actually process all the nutrients properly.

Have been drinking it as my breakfast/lunch replacement for the past 5 months. I absolutely love the flavor. There are times when I crave solid food, but when I get through a bottle, I'm pretty satisfied and happy that I kept to 400 kcal for those meals.

They just released a coffee version, called Coffiest, that has L-theanine in it that is supposed to be a caffeine that doesn't cause jitters. I'm not sure on how well the caffeine interacts with me as I've never been one to get jitters or be actually feel the effects of caffeine. However, the flavor is so delicious. It tastes like a black coffee/mocha/original Soylent blend.

They actually just came out with a bar as well. It is 250 kcal. It is aptly named 'Soylent Bar'. It is supposed to have a caramel/salted caramel flavor from what I've read. I haven't bought it yet, but there are times when I'm hungry in the mid-morning/mid-afternoon, and I don't want something from a vending machine.

When it comes to nutrition, it really comes down to how much you are eating of it, how many supplements you are taking, is this your only source, etc... I haven't been on a strict diet of Soylent, so I can't vouch for how a 100% diet of it is. However, I've been relatively active, and my body hasn't reacted poorly to it or gained any weight from it.

Anyway, I just love the ability to grab a bottle for breakfast without thinking about it, and eventually when I get the bars, I will love having that as my go-to snack. If you PM me, I can send you a referral that gets you 50% off your first order of Soylent 2.0. The referral system only gives you a perk and not me. However, they donate 4 meals for hungry children for every new subscriber.

1. Yes. Thread here:

https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/soylent-green-is-dinner.2323062/

2. I like the convenience of the bottled kind, but I prefer the powder.

3. Recipe is open-source, so you can tweak the macros to fit your needs if you're willing to make a DIY batch. Tons of resources out there for rolling your own mix.

4. Some people do 100% soylent; I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not (re: missing phytochemicals & the like). At any rate, one of the biggest benefits is that it makes real food taste better. You appreciate it a lot more. It's like when you've been mowing the lawn for hours in the hot sun & you go in and have a nice cold glass of lemonade with ice & it's the best thing ever...Soylent gives you fuel for the day, and when you finally eat, it's a nicer experience because you've been chugging bland shakes all day. At least, that's how it works for me. Stuff like pizza for dinner is amazing after a day of Soylent.

5. Don't view it as something crazy, just look at it as an amped-up protein shake, similar to Ensure. If you don't want to cook or are crunched on time, drink a glass of Soylent & voila, the hunger goes away & you know that you're getting 100% nutrition in that drink - no natural or artificial colors or flavors, no cellulose, no corn syrup, etc.
