So my 5th grader just won a bet with me that there are 5 Oceans. That's right! 5! And sure enough there's now a Southern Ocean. What kind of sorcery is this? Who is the blasphemer who came up with this nonsensical, illogical new ocean! First Pluto was demoted, now this!!! WTH are they teaching kids in schools nowadays????

That is a surprise for me also. Maybe global warming had a part in this with melting the glaciers. Less glaciers means more open water.

Yep, and fancy this - Australians call everything south of their continent the Southern Ocean although it's well over 20 degrees of latitude from the acknowledged limit of 60 degrees south for the Southern Ocean, and almost 30 degrees at the peak of the Great Bight.

Southern Ocean is usually called the Antarctic Ocean.

Absolute bullshit OP, since its been known for like 300 years ago, that changes in el Neno and la nino condition in Southern Oceans have profould effects on the the North Alantic weather.

The Antarctic circumpolar current does help isolate the waters around Antarctica from the waters to the north but I don't like the idea of a donut shaped ocean.

My niece was going to private school and told me there was 10 planets... I told her no there is nine and I named them. Turns out there's 8 now, fuckers...

I've heard it referred to as the Southern Ocean in sailing/shipping circles for many years.

This song just pooped into my head and will likely be with me all day so I thought I'd share.

Southern Nights Have You Ever Felt A
Southern Night Free As A Breeze
Not To Mention The Trees
Whistling Tunes That You Know And Love So

Southern Nights Just As Good Even When
Closed Your Eyes I Apologize
To Any One Who Can Truly Say
He Has Found A Better Way

I asked my son this morning to get an answer to this question to the teacher "What kind of witchery are you teaching in regards to a 'Southern Ocean'?"

He said "No".

What kind of answer is "no" to a question that starts with "what kind of..."?
