Theme parks:
Disneyland <--- (If you only want to do one of these, I recommend this one)
California Adventures
Knott's berry farm
Univeral Studios
Raging Waters
Six Flags Magic Mountain (fastests rides estan aqui)
San Diego Zoo (~2 hour drive, but it's supposed to be really nice)
Sea World (also San Diego)

Take a drive on Mulholland drive. It sits on the mountain between two valleys...amazing views

California Science center is fun too. Free admission, and they have an IMAX theatre as well.

If you're classy, the Huntington Gardens in San Marino (not Pasadena or South Pasadena like others think)

Go camping in Angeles crest National Park (ask around about Monkey's Canyon...40' jumps off boulders into a small pool, dangerous but fun)

Go shopping on Hollywood & Vine

For comedy, go to Laugh Factory on sunset

Knott's just put in a new ride that looks cool, not far from Disneyland. Six Flags is about an hour drive north from there, and San Diego is about 90min drive south (better beaches imo).

or Descanso Gardens in La Canada (with a "~" over the "n")

It depends what you want to do. My favorite beach is at corona del mar down by newport, it has tide pools and 'arch rock' that you can swim to and jump off and is a very beautiful place. Also theres Crystal cove park just a little farther south of newport.

Huntington Beach is cool if you just want to sit on the beach/pier and check out hot chicks. The waves are good there so there is always a lot of surfers there, and the main st. in front of the pier has a ton of surf shops.

I never go to the beaches at Long beach, even though I'm from there. Theres basically no waves thanks to the breakwater and the beaches there just don't compare to orange county beaches. However you might want to drive along Ocean Blvd at night, the thumbs islands are all lit up nice and pretty in an effort to hide the fact that they are really just ugly oil rigs.

I don't have a lot of experience with most LA beaches like redondo or santa monica, but I remember Malibu is worth a visit. And of course Venice beach.
