I found this on CNN...what do you guys think? Is it okay or is it macabre and inappropriate? Sorry if it's a repost, I searched.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- The cartoon series South Park has never been shy of courting controversy, but its latest episode has caused outrage by featuring the recently deceased Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.

Swearing and random death and destruction are staples of the cartoon, which has been broadcast since 1997. Irwin, killed by a stingray's barb while snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef in September is the latest celebrity to be lampooned by the show.

The episode, aired in the U.S. earlier this week, shows Satan preparing to host aHalloween fancy dress party. Other guests include Princess Diana, Hitler and rapper Notorious B.I.G. Critics have been appalled by the Irwin character's depiction in a bloodstained shirt and with a stingray still attached to his chest.

John Beyer of UK TV watchdog Mediawatch said: "This is such bad taste and the makers of South Park should review their decision to show it. Steve's family are still grieving.

"To lampoon somebody's death like that is unacceptable and so soon after the event is grossly insensitive.''

South Park maker Comedy Central defended the episode. A spokesperson for the company said: "It has offended people in the past and probably will again. Regular watchers would not be shocked."

The show holds the record for the most swearword spoken in one program, and regularly takes pot-shots at celebrities and makes fun of politics and religion.

Some tamer examples include George Clooney, mocked for his politically-motivated Oscar acceptance speech, and lampooning Tom Cruise and John Travolta for their belief in Scientology. One episode with a depiction of a bleeding Virgin Mary so upset the Catholic Church that it was pulled from repeats of the series.

haven't seen it, but my gut reaction was that it's probably tasteless. I don't mind when SP spoofs a complete asshat, but Irwin was a decent person.

It's South Park? Why is anyone surprised anymore by what Matt and Trey do?

I think John Beyer didn't watch the episode but will happily offer his worthless opinion as long as it gets him a sound bite.

They were "lampooning" the morons who'll show up at Halloween parties with Steve Irwin costumes and think they're funny.

it went prettymuch like this:
Satan is having a Halloween party, and all the dead residents of Hell are there in wacky costumes.
Someone runs up to Satan.
Guy: "Hey Satan, we got a little problem."
Satan: "What?"
Guy: "Somebody showed up in a Crocodile Hunter costume. It's really offending some of the other guests."
Satan: "Aw, Jeez." (He walks over to Steve Irwin with a beer and a stingray hanging out of his chest.)
Satan: "Hey, uh, hi, listen, dude. Y'know, The whole Crocodile Hunter thing? It's just a little soon, you know? I mean he just died a few weeks ago, and it's just not super cool. And you gotta leave."
Steve: "But it's me, Satan. Steve Irwin. I am the Crocodile Hunter."
Satan: "Oh. Oh, but then, dude, no costume. Sorry, you gotta go."
Steve: "Wait! I thought we were friends!" (escorted out)

it was funny frankly...although the stingray hanging out of his chest was a bit much.
They mocked the guy in previous episodes (i'm going to stick my thumb up this crocs bum hehehe) so it was only fitting that they had to portray him in some way for this one.

i find it even funnier though that their were the catholic priests with the naked little boys and no uproar on that...and hitler being the "can you hear me now" guy....and gacy, dahmer, and bundy playing the trhee stooges....i mean the episode was filled with things to get pissed about and people are only complaining about steve?

I saw it and it didn't strike me as tasteless. It was a very brief scene.

That doesn't sound bad.

Here's a recent post made on an aquarium professional listserve I belong to. Funny stuff, imo. I left out parts which could have revealed identity and/or facility.

I just had a conversation with the woman who runs our giftshop here at work. Apparently there has been a run on the stuffed animal stingrays along with the kid size zookeeper outfits. Folks intend to sew the rays to the front and send the kids out on Halloween as Steve Irwin. Man that's harsh.

Ridiculous. Clearly, whoever wrote that didn't see the episode. It wasn't exactly "tasteful," but neither were they "lampooning" the guy's death.

Bad, but was for some reason relieved to read it was in a halloween costume party. Costume parties are generally 'no holds barred' imo.

Sorry, I can't agree. I think people are just trying to be creative with costumes, but that's not a way to approach it. It's complete ignorance to dress your child up like that. And to think people are actually saying it's a tribute to Irwin... what crap.

How many time have I read that line in the past 9 years? Yeah, it's an offensive show. If you're an easily offended pussy, don't bloody watch it.

I never cared for south park. It is funny stuff, but its all just shock humor, nothing really funny enough to be repeated out in the open or to recall 5 years from now about. However personally, I dont think its too soon and I dont think its off limits. Also I doubt Steve would mind.
