South Miami officials propose seceding from Florida, creating 51st state



City of South Miami commissioners have approved a resolution that calls for splitting Florida in half. The resolution outlines a new state, made up of 24 counties in the southern part of the peninsula.

The split would be along the Interstate 4 corridor.

Though the proposal sounds farcical, it highlights the serious issue of rising sea levels, which threaten the southern half of the state.


According to the resolution, which passed by a 3-2 vote, North Florida sits 120 feet above sea level, while parts of South Florida are 5 feet or less above sea level.


The “situation is very precarious and in need of immediate attention,” according to the resolution, which goes on to say that water levels are expected to rise 3 to 6 feet over the next century.

Commissioners said the creation of a 51st state “is a necessity for the very survival of the entire southern region,” claiming that, “Often South Florida issues do not receive the support of Tallahassee. This is despite the fact that South Florida generates more than 69% of the state’s revenue.”

Florida voters and Congress would need to approve splitting the state.

Many efforts to split California have failed, this is first time I recall a split for Florida being tried.

Have the people in the low lying areas accepted reality yet: stop development near the coast and move. I've seen a couple of places where they say, "Well, look at Holland! Holland does it for a $billion each year." Their geography is very much different from Holland, and the area involved is huge compared to Holland.


The odd thing though, in a lot of other coastal cities in other states, there's been very little discussion about the problem. The number of homes that are built at 6 feet (or less) above current sea level is huge. Is the entire coast of the US going to resemble those houses in Fiji that are out over the water, on stilts?

Incidentally: investment for the very young among you: take your best guess where the coast line is going to be when you retire. Buy the cheaper land that's inland of the current coast. When you're ready to retire, you'll own beach front property. 😛

I can see this eventually happening as areas become more populated and it becomes harder to appease the masses. I think the idea to break California up into 6 states has quite a bit of merit. A state the size of California almost needs more than 1 governor.

The problem with that proposition was that the divisions they had planned out were dumb as fuck. And California is probably only 3 maybe 4 state divisions. And one of those includes some of Oregon as well if not just join Oregon.

And while we're at it, do North Dakota and South Dakota need to be separate states? Heck, toss in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho while you're at it, and make it one big state that no one wants to live in. ( 😛 ). And, hey, Michigan is split into 2 parts, how about that huge state is even larger with the addition of Alaska. Do we really need all those government offices in Alaska for what is effectively the mayor of a medium sized city?? 😛

Dakota's were split for political reasons from a single territory.
It was agreed that the Dakota territory would be a state; but an unbalance politically; so two states were created.

And lets take NY and split into two.
Everything south of West Point as one new state.
