This is only a very modern interpretation that only happened when activist fundy conservative justices started getting shoved down the throats of US citizens, and a simple gun-safety organization pivoted towards being a hyper-funded lobbying group populated by violent, socialist terrorists.
For the first ~200 years of this country, SCOTUS only ever interpreted the extremely rare challenges to the 2A (rare because the wording and understanding was always seen as blatantly obvious) as a collective right, with certain individual allowances
under necessary regulations.
