Talk about stimulus you can believe in. South Carolina is declaring a "second amendment weekend". No sales tax on guns. That state keeps doing all the right things.

Now if you really wanted to stimulate the economy states could offer a sales-tax free december for the shopping season. That would IMMEDIATELY kick start the economy.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina shoppers will get a second chance to buy tax-free guns.

The state Revenue Department sent out a reminder Wednesday of the upcoming "Second Amendment Weekend." The 48-hour tax break begins just after midnight the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Shoppers will pay no state or local sales taxes on handguns, rifles and shotguns, which can tally 9 percent. Taxes still apply to ammunition and accessories.

South Carolina had the nation's first tax holiday on guns last year, after legislators tacked it on to a tax break on energy-efficient appliances. But the state Supreme Court threw out that law in May because of an unrelated energy amendment. Lawmakers restored the tax break as a one-time event in the budget this year.

Louisiana followed this year with its own sales tax holiday for hunters in September. That break went further, applying to any item that can be used for hunting or fishing, including off-road vehicles, airboats, animal feed and ear plugs.

South Carolina is the only state to designate a tax-free weekend during two of the year's biggest shopping days.

How much shoppers saved in the gun-friendly state last Thanksgiving weekend is unknown. State economic officials estimated it would cost the state about $15,000.

The National Rifle Association praises the idea.

"It allows gun owners in tough economic times to stock up on the hunting season and holiday season," said NRA spokeswoman Alexa Fritts.

But the director of a nonprofit that advocates for changes in South Carolina's tax structure said "there is no good tax reason to have a gun sales tax holiday."

"It isn't tax policy. It's gun policy," said John Ruoff of South Carolina Fair Share. "Our state tax system is sufficiently screwed up that instead of taking a serious look at it ... we keep doing stuff like a gun sales tax holiday, or a going-back-to-school tax holiday, all of which are very shortsighted tax policies or kneejerk pandering."

His group argues the state unfairly relies on sales and excise taxes, which disproportionately affect the poor.

South Carolina's tax-free weekend for school supplies is in August.

why do gun owners need to "stock up" on guns for the hunting season ? Can they wear a gun on each finger ?

For the same reason people like to own multiple cars, bikes or collect things.
People have the mindset that a gun is just a gun, but they all differ in handling , comfort, capability, and one rifle might be great for deer and suck for squirrels.

You have to have different guns for different occasions. For instance, when you are in a deer stand hoping to shoot a buck, you need a different gun then when you are at home guarding your meth lab.

I have a 3 TVs and a 106" projection screen in my home, but can only watch one at a time.

I have 3 gaming systems but can only play one at a time.

I have 3 laptops but can only use one at a time.

And I have 8 guns (I think) that all serve different purposes:

1) .380 auto is hidden for self defense
2) 9mm is in my night stand for self defense
3) .45 is in vehicle for self defense
4) AK-47 with folding stock is in gun safe (mostly used for fun)
5) AK-47 bullpup is in gun safe (mostly fun)
Note: AK-47, the very best there is. When you absolutely, positively, have to kill every single motherfucker in the room; accept no substitute
6) AR-15 is in gun safe (target practice, just a fun gun to shoot)
7) PSL is in gun safe (sniper rifle - I've actually never even fired it)
8) Shotgun is in gun safe (self defense, hunting) although it is a combat shotgun. Maybe combating some birds? I dunno.

Some of them are investments - AK-47s have doubled in price since a few years ago. AR-15s have too. Tell me one thing you've purchased and used that has doubled in value in 5 years.

****EDIT****
Guns are not a necessity. Having a tax-free weekend on them is stupid. Have tax free weekend on fuel, clothing, building materials, etc. This is like having a tax free weekend on video games or cigarettes.

This is correct. For me it is more about fashion. I can't wear my Nikes with the AR-15! Are you stupid?!?! They totally clash. Skechers and the AR-15 look nice; Nikes go with the .45. If it is a wedding I'll bring my nicest tux and the shotgun. And if I'm at home in my camo Snuggie I'll usually carry around my bullpup AK.

South Carolina can only afford very limited sales tax exemptions because the state legislature, accomodating the wealthiest citizens, gutted the property tax system and replaced that funding with an expanded state sales tax. We have seen a dramatic shift in property tax burden to the middle and lower class, with a similarly dramatic decline in sales tax revenues due to reduced retail purchases in the current recession.

South Carolina is a nice place to live for a number of reasons, but our state government "keeps doing all the right things"? There's no "LOL" smiley half hysterical enough for that statement.

I find these tax free weekend deals to be ridiculous in most cases. Here in Tennessee there is typically a back-to-school tax free weekend for supplies, clothes, and computers. It represents about a 9.5% savings since Tennessee only has a sales tax. What I see with the clothing at least that many items cost the same because stores jack up the price and the state takes a revenue hit.

With computers and nationally advertised specials.. you can save some on laptops.. but generally clothes are the biggest thing sold.

If I lived in South Carolina I'd want to have a bunch of guns at my disposal.

I almost spewed the LCD on that.

This will go over big in SC for the math-challenged. The retailers can jack up prices 15% or more ...

And folks will flock to the stores to buy 'em some guns cuz it's a sales tax holiday and that commie-pinko gov't ain't getting none of their money.

Prices are actually coming down some. People would know how much the gun should cost, even including the obama effect.

I thought guns were cheap right now anyways, it's the ammo that is super expensive.

I find it funny that in a panic to avoid ammo shortages due to the "looming Obama ban"(it's happening tomorrow - BUY NOW!!!), people have been hoarding ammo - creating shortages.

My experience in the Carolinas is that the bargains are few and far between on 'tax free' holidays.

Not to sound like a cynic but it seems we have them on a monthly basis now and it's become little more than a marketing gimmick.

We just had one last week for Energy Star Appliances ....

South Carolina should have a tax free weekend on everything and really stimulate their economy.

Tax isn't what keeps poor people from buying things. Lack of the purchase price keeps people from buying things. If you can afford the item, you can afford the tax. Tax is generally only a issue above middle class status.

If you want to 'kickstart the economy' start offering living wage jobs (NOT service industry, minimum wage, part time, or other crap). When people start making money, they'll start spending it.

Pre-1986 miniguns are legal. That should cover your still.

This would definitely keep those inbred Hillbillies away from my Still

You don't have to protect a still from friends and neighbors. Those "inbred Hillbillies" you so casually disparage would help hide your still from ATF; they'd even help stir the mash and stoke the fire for you.
