errr, I've never heard anything good about USB modems.

Is that the only modem you can use?

The USB DSL modem (SpeedStream 4060) is a nightmare for Windows 2000 Users. Efficientnetwork, the manufactor never keep their promise on the release of its driver. I was first informed it would be available in June. Then, July. Then, August, Then September. Finally, it turns out to send me to my telephone company for driver. Bellsouth askes me to contact the manufactor. In a word, I spend $200 for trouble and broken hope.

oh, efficient came through finally. they've got some beta win2k drivers out there for the 4060, but they ain't worth the bandwidth or time to download.

sure, win2k now recognizes the modem, but for all my trying, neither verizon nor the freedsl software can access it.

blah.

The 4060 is inherently buggy. It is much wiser to go with a NIC and external modem. Also the drivers for the 4060 conflict with SB Live! and the Live! has to be disabled or removed from the system. Been there, done that. I have the 5260 which seems to be a good modem. Now if only I could find a good ISP!

Bell Atlantic and AOL Plus DSL use Efficient modems, either USB or internal, depending on what you ask for. AOL has a free install+modem promotion going on now, so if you want, sign up with them to get the modem, then cancel. Efficient modems, especially the USB and the internal are semi-crap and have some bugs (I know, I have the internal), but they do the job alright.
