Soundstorm rising from the dead?

Well we'll wait and see. I really hope it happens

Soundnstorm is teh ROXOR guys 😛 (j/k but it is awesome though)

Soundstorm is dead. Let it rest. Hardware audio acceleration in general is on it's way out. Just look at Doom 3. The audio is 100% on the CPU. NO audio hardware.

Edit: Ok, I admit it. This is a bad post. If you don't like what I said, please read the whole thread first. If after that you still want to flame me, it's your choice, but I'm already feeling well-done. 😉

What has Doom 3 got to with the SoundStorm?....,it`s the best onboard sound available,I`m glad it`s not dead and would definitely buy another SoundStorm motherboard in the future, especially if based around the Athlon 64.

FYI hardware acceleration is important for gaming, especially if you want to keep FPS high in most games.

I concur. Putting all the fancy audio effects on the CPU is just plain idiotic. Especially as the realism of games increases every year, the sound gets more advanced as well.

Don't shoot the messenger.

I love Soundstorm and use on my PC every day.

And yes I totally agree that putting all the sound processing on the CPU is stupid. Especially for games.

However, over the last few months, nVidia has said over and over again that it will not be reviving Soundstorm. Now the CEO does an about face? If other would like to speculate, that's fine. I'll believe when I can buy it in a new product. In the mean time, I will not get my hopes up.

I thought that hardware audio would be nice - my dream was of a hardware-based voice recognition chip of some sort, or at least instructions like MMX or SSE that would somehow work to improve the speed and ability of voice recognition, without requiring an even faster processor. It seems that they're having trouble making faster processors, at least for now - concentrating more of the workload there seems counter-intuitive.

Soundstorm is awesome... but maybe it's a little before its time? I imagine once the HTPC becomes more popular, you'll see a Soundstorm-esque technology come back (or at least I hope so).

STFU. You have no idea what you are talking about, not even remotely.

HW acceleration is here, i dont know what you are talking about its on its way out because that is the biggest load of crap i have ever heard.

Also i doubt SS is dead, theyll bring it back sooner or later, and better.

That is a really good point. It makes me wonder why D3 audio is all CPU. The game already was going to bring many rigs to their knees. Why not off load the audio for those who had the hardware? Maybe CPU processed audio will make more sense when we move to dual cores in a few years.

No need to be rude. I am not trying to flamebait anyone.

I was relaying what I read in the December issue of Maximum PC. I understand that many here at AT don't like them, and if they got this wrong, I could understand why.

Maximum PC - Maximum BS.

This is the same mag that reviewed an Athlon system with faster procs, more ram, etc. etc. - an overall MUCH better system then I had at the time. The review was Mac vs Intel vs AMD.

It was significantly slower then my system.

Ti4200 vs Ti4600 and whatnot - it had a marked advantage. And yet it was remarkably slower then my system in the benchmarks.

Their benchmarks are questionable, at best. I'll not comment on any other information they report.

With dual core on the way multithreaded games will be able to push a lot more things that were traditionally offloaded from the cpu to increase efficiency.

With 2 CPUs you can essentially break up the rendering, audio, physics, AI, etc to the 2 chips.

Geez, we aren't playing counterstrike here, no need for random STFU's...

Its alive because of intel. As many have speculated before, when amd put the memory controller on the cpu, nvidia no longer had a place to put its soundstorm. This is a win-win for nvidia, not only will they be able to create an intel based soundstorm motherboard (which because of azalia will be warmly recieved because it can do what azalia does in hardware), they will also be able to market these chips in the pci-e add in sound board market (for amd 64 users) just a via does(with its envy chips), and I'm sure some highend motherboard makers will use the chips in thier high end mainboard. This is the best day in pc sound since the creation of aureal vortex 2 (the finest gaming sound product ever. a3d 2.0 and 3.0 were simply amazing. F* creative

Yeah i guess i did kinda overdue it lol. Sry guys (Rike)... sorta just happens when i see a troll or someone who talks with no realy basis.

As for Maximum PC saying that crap, they are wrong. It is just good marketing to get people to read more and all that. HW audio is here to stay isn't going anywhere.

FOr SOunndstorm it is debatable but i wouldn't be suprised if in a couple of weeks/months we saw it pop out again.

My theory:
Nvidia will put soundstorm onto their vid cards and call them multimedia cards.
I remember seeing something on slashdot about someone getting their gpu to accel the sound, but it was hard to do because agp bandwidth is not really meant to go back to the northbridge. PCIE has a buttload of bandwidth for that kind of thing. </crazytheory>

NV1 had on-board sound in ~1995.

They could offer it as an add-on chip for video card vendors to offer or just put in in some future die, but a PCIe x1 card is just as likely.

Gamingphreek, I'm sorry about my first post. 🙁 I went back and read it and you're right, it sounds completely trollish. It was a bad post.

I guess I've learned my lesson about Maximum PC. I'll look at what they say with a more critical eye in the future.

Anyway, here's to Soundstorm:beer:. May the rumors of its death have been greatly exaggerated and may Maximum PC eat their words, because I don't want to! 🙂
