I'm a fairly athletic fellow being a part of two teams... Volleyball and Roller Hockey. Welp, last night in the less dangerous of the two, we were 1/2 way though our second game. I had noticed earlier that the floor was a bit stickier than normal. Apparently they had some sort of a dance on the gym floor a few days before. I went up to block a spike, and when I came down my left shoe decided to stick in a spot while my ankle decided to go it's own route. Immediately, I heard a very loud SNAP followed by the most unbelievable pain I've ever felt. I immediately crashed to the floor while my mother, wife, father and teammates ran to my aid and carted me off to the sidelines for ice and eventually a trip to the Hospital. Thankfully, I did not break any bones, but I did tear a ligament pretty badly. Currently, I am unable to walk without aid (crutches) and I've got to wear a velcro split for the time being...

From what the doc told me, it could take anywhere from 3 days to 6 weeks before I'm really back to 100%. I went through my whole childhood without a sprain or break, and now... a month away from my 27th birthday here we are, foot elevated.... feeling completely worthless. 🙁

UPDATE:
Ok, so yesterday I took the brace off to get a look at my stupid foot. I've got bruises on either side of the heal as well as one really fat foot. Is that normal? I've never had this happen before, is swelling normal? Should I call the orthapedist?

Not to be negative, but if you get off with only 6 weeks you're lucky. Ankles heal VERY slowly, sometimes not at all. I've sprained my ankle so many times (soccer, she is a b|tch) that now my ligaments are pretty much worthless. I get sprains so easy now, but they only hurt for a day or two because the ligament is so stretched out (? I guess, no explanation, but each time it happens it takes less to heal).

Sorry to hear it, didn't you just hurt your knee too, a week or so ago? How'd that turn out? Anyway, my body makes a lot of sounds it probably shouldn't as well 😀

I nearly completely tore a ligament in my ankle... it sucked. But I only used an aircast for about 3 weeks?! Meh, it must be because I'm 17 years young and recover quickly 😀

seriously let that heal all the way before you try using it again, or you're asking for trouble.

my ankles are crap now from years in a drum corp and roller hockey.

sorry to hear that....

must have been excruciatingly painful 🙁

what better way to drown your pain than posting on AT 😛

It probably has to do with age and genetics. For example, when my mother was around 40 she sprained her ankle bad while backpacking. It took her nearly a year to fully recover from it. Granted she had to hike out 10 miles with a pack on after she sprained it, but that it's still an extraordinarily long time to recover.

Yep, that was my right knee. Quite honestly, the pain in my right knee was nothing compared to what I felt with my left ankle. I'm a wreck 🙂

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. I just hope it heals up quick.

I've pulled by ankle ligament before, not sure if there is a big difference in terms of pain and damage between tearing and pulling the ligament... but it was very painful if I remember.

At least you didn't roll your ankle, that one is very ugly to see happen. That happened to this guy i absolutely HATED on the varsity team my sophomore year/his senior year. I'm sorry to admit I was a little bit pleased that his season was over.

I broke my left lemur on a sunday afternoon when I was 5. When the neighborhood kids ran to go get him, my dad thought I was being a pvssy and made me walk home on it (100 yards). We didn't go to the hospital until the next morning. (emoticon goes here). Although playing cops and robbers on our bikes after a rain was equally stupid.

Left or right foot? Stick shift of automatic car?

who the fug cares? Fine, I was going up to block a hit, or a swing or whatever. It's a rec league, I'm not hardcore like you. Go sing some boy band songs.

ohhh take THAT high school deeko.

Its not my fault you weren't using the right equipment. Volleyball players wear ActiveAnkles for a reason. Its like a football player complaining that he got a concussion when he happened to not be wearing a helmet.

You suck at comparisons. I've been playing Rec volleyball for 4 years and before that played 2 years of intermural volleyball in college. No one has ever worn anything more than a simple sock-style ankle brace. Not everyone is as hardcore as you.
