soundcard

Alright, I just got a new PC and it has onboard sound. But, I really want something better. I met a guy once who had his PC sound hooked into some large house speakers. I was wondering how you would do that. I originally thought that maybe you had to have a special soundcard and then run through a stereo tuner? I don't know how close I am, but I'd appreciate any replies about help with this or additional information. Thanks, in advance.

What kind of sound do you want? Turtle Beach and SB Audigy are pretty popular cards. I still use the SB Live with my stereo and it works fine for me. On the card there will be a non amplified line-out jack. Connect that to the line-in on one of the AUX inputs of your stereo.

The only kicker in this deal for me was a low frequency hum that was caused by a grounding problem.

Well, I'm not looking for a really superb sound, but I do want something that sounds pretty good. So a pretty basic card would do it? Just make sure it has an amplified line-out jack?

No, modern soundcards don't have amplified out jacks, they're line-level like a CD player. You either need to connect to a stereo or buy self-powered speakers.
