Sound Static/Distortion on Gigabyte 6VTXE-A with SB128

I recently upgraded my Mobo to a Gigabyte 6VTXE-A from an old Abit BX6. I transferred over all my *old* components and put the new combination in a brand new case. I tried using the onboard sound but had no end of problems so just disabled it and put my SB128 in.

I have a problem which can be easily replicated/fixed but is an annoyance for sure.

If while the soundcard is in use (playing a DVD, MPEG, MP3, a game, etc...) I start doing *something else* I start getting crackling/fuzzy noise which gets worse and worse until I have to restart whatever application is using the soundcard.

For Example: I'm watching a DVD or MPEG movie and then start surfing the web or exploring a drive while the movie is still playing. I can *hear* the menu's opening - there's *noise* when I maximize and minimize windows. After 5 to 30 seconds of using my PC do this other stuff the sound become permanently distorted and I'll have to close down WinDVD or Realplay and reopen the movie to get fresh sound.

Another example is while gaming. If I Alt-Tab to windows, when I go back to the game the sound is all fubar'd. If I reload my last saved game (I guess forcing some part of the sound engine to reset) the sound returns to normal.

Any ideas? This never happened on my old board with all the same components. The only things that changed when I upgrade my board were the CPU itself (went from Celeron 800 to 1.4 Tualatin) and the case/psu. Is it the motherboard? Is it software related? I've tried refreshing drivers and DirectX but nothing fixes it.

My System:

Windows98 SE
DirectX 9.0a

Tualatin 1.4 (stock clock)
Gigabyte 6VTXE-A
512MB PC133 Crapola RAM
60 GB Maxtor ATA100
Asus V9280 GF4 Ti4200 @ 280/545

Thanks!

Yes it is.

I just found something related on a game site regarding sound distortion. It appears that WinDVD uses a file called iviaudio.ax - which is also a file used by Sound Blaster cards. It appears they can somehow conflict with each other... I'm going to have to do some more research.

I'm not sure how it explains why browsing around some of my drives while watching a DVD messes up the sound... but hopefully I'll figure it out.

One last bump. Anyone have any thoughts.

UPDATE:
The problem doesn't occur when I'm just listening to music (ie. Winamp). I can do all sorts of things with my PC while Winamp is running without any sound problems. It's only if I am watching a movie/video (DVD or MPG/AVI) or playing a game that my sound has distortion problems. So it's either related to 3D sound emulation (hardware acceleration of some kind) or video.

Or this Mobo just bites. *shrug*

turn on "spread spectrum" in bios.
wrap the card in aluminum foil as an emi shield.

do a completely clean driver install.
play with the dma and sound acceleration settings.

which sb-128? 4700? 4750 or 4751?

ask about it in the alt.creative.soundblaster newsgroup.

I have "window open" and mouse roll noises through my sb-128, but I think that's because I have the volume turned up too high. Actually, in some environments, it is possible to hear the pitch shift of the monitor's hum by changing window sizes or colors. This noise is produced by the monitor itself, without speakers or even a soundcard.

Use white text on a black background; this is the quietest.
