sound recording comparison between two SB cards

Hi all,

I'm currently setting up the hardware needed to record vinyl records to my laptop but am stuck on deciding between two sound cards, both from Creative Labs.

The first one is the Audigy 2 ZS - Notebook pcmcia sound card at $129:

The second one is Audigy 2 NX at $99:

Now let's assume price is not a factor. The main difference between these two devices (in terms of recording) is the fact that the NX has an isolated "line-in" jack which is pretty standard for recording signals from other sources, and I'm confident I would get a decent recording given this. The pcmcia card, however, has an input jack for mic/line/optical all combined into one. Now I'm not sure if this would cause any problems while recording since it's all one jack. Does anyone know?

Also, the main reason I am not going with the NX immediately is because of the convenience of the pcmcia card. If I knew for sure that the mic/line/optical-in jack would not cause any problems with recording vinyl then I would choose this one for sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

1) I read the sticky.

2) I posted in GHW first - 33 views no replies.

3) Logically speaking, it would seem this question is highly technical, else someone would have been able to provide an answer. After all, how many ppl know what types of recording problems combination sound input jacks would cause, given the fact they are a brand new technology? I'm sure they are wired differently, and are they shielded from each other? If unshielded, what types of distortion can I expect while recording, and at what frequencies? These types of questions might be a tad on the technical side for the "general" public.

4) Then decided to post in this forum for some help since it seemed out of the other forum's league.

5) Hopefully someone else will leave a more constructive message on the next reply to this thread.

Your GH thread was started at 11/16/2004 03:19 PM, and this one at 11/16/2004 06:11 PM. You didn't even wait three hours, and I believe the forum rules are that you shouldn't bump a thread more than once every FOUR hours, let alone post a whole new one.
