Sound problem

I recently built a new pc. I use the optical output for sound to a receiver for 5.1 sound. I'm using XP Pro x64 which could be the problem but the sound only comes out of the left and right speakers and I tested the speakers in my old pc using the same connection and it works so it is this computer. I have a MSI K8N SLI-F mobo:

and the onboard sound is RealTek. My receiver shows whats speakers are being used and while plugged in it only shows the left, right, and sub( hasn't worked on this system either ). I've updated bios, got all the latest drivers to my knowledge, if anyone can help that be great thanks in advance.

It's working perfectly fine. That is what happens to non-encoded(Not DTS and Dolby Digital) signals over a digital line.

so its the on board sound that can't process it?

Only cards that can do what you are asking is ones with DDL and/or DTS connect. If you want this look into the Auzentech line. Specifically the X-Plosion

my old motherboard used the realtek codec/drivers and it did it fine. would you suggest a sound card to fix this, I only want it for games, i dont wants movies on this pc.

Did you hook up via analog with your old board? Otherwise, it couldn't have. Realtek has never produced a DDL or DTS connect sound solution. If you had soundstorm before than that explains it. But that's by NVIDIA not Realtek.

I already suggested you look into the Auzentech X-Plosion to solve this problem in my previous post. It does DTS connect and Dolby digital live. Both things that encode surround sound in real time to the digital line.

I used the realtek codec on my old pc and the mobo manual says it does but I almost postive I use the nvidia mixer software to configure the speakers. When ever I pluged the optical in, my receiver would say dobly digital 5.1 or something along those lines, so thats is proably why it worked. Another question, I was thinking og getting these speakers for my pc:

they do not use the optical or coaxial but the other 3(i belive) connections. would those speakers so the 5.1? those logitech speakers would be better sounding than my current speakers so thats is why im thinking of getting them, thanks for your help.

Yes that's another option. If you use the analog outs you will get surround sound from your PC for non-encoded sources along with encoded ones(so movies and games basically). If your receiver had 5.1 analog ins on it you could use splitters to connect it to your motherboard. I do not recommend it however as it is a pain in my opinion. But if you get a computer speaker system then by all means connect via analog and your problems will be solved.

It sounds like you had Soundstorm on your previous motherboard which was an NVIDIA thing. That would explain why you say Dolby digital each time you connected(otherwise you should just see this when playing something like a movie)

yea i assumed that the new nforce boards would would better and the same as the older ones, but thats what i get for assuming, lol. Thanks a lot for helping me, you solved my problem perfectly, no I just have to go buy something, lol. Thanks again
