sound problem

i NEVER had this problem EVER. i ALWAYS reformatted, installed the CD version of the drivers, and i was listening to my 400 songs. now, i install the driver from the asus WEBSITE (mobo = ASUS A7V400-MX) and i have no sound. nothing. it just doesnt work.

thing is; headphones dont work either, so i dont know what the issue is. at this im thinking it HAS to be a software issue...but wtf?

It does sound like a driver issue. Is it build in sound or a card, and if so, how old is the card? I Tried to use a cheap pricewatch card and it would work in linux, but not windows due to an old kernel. Uninstall it and try other drivers, perhaps something generic. Or skip ASUS and whoever supplied the chip (VIA or C-Media...) and see what they might have. You can go see what it is in your device manager. Always delete the old one when installing another, too! the thing is its integrated into the motherboard, which is only about 2 years old. and the providor is VIA...so i'll go there....

well...i downloaded the whole package by VIA and installed it...and still NOTHING.

this is really annoying as i have so much music that i cannot listen to now

Are you sure Onboard Sound is enabled in BIOS?
Did you fully uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones?
Did you plug the speakers in the right jack? God knows I've done that once or twice myself.

Install the drivers from the CD. Asus could be pushing you the wrong file as the "latest" from their website. I've had this happen before.

Yes. It sounds very much to me like you're getting the wrong audio drivers.

I relate to your problem because had a similar experience with an old Intel mobo. Intel had changed audio on different revs of the mobo, but that fact was hard to dig out.

Suggest you carefully review your ASUS mobo manual to make really sure which onboard audio you have for your mobo revision.

I suspect you may find you need a different set of drivers than what's displayed on Asus' website. Say for example, maybe you need Yamaha (just an example) or some other brand drivers.

For example, I notice your model mobo can come with either VIA KM400A or VIA VT8237 chipsets. And that it has:

SoundMAX Audio Driver V1.0.7
* * * OR * * *
SoundMAX Audio Driver version 5.12.01.3663 WHQL.

Whichever one of these you downloaded maybe it's the other one that you need.
