SOUND POPS, How to assign IRQ's

I am getting random sound pops (loud) through my speakers, not a big problem but annoying. My Via AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) is on IRQ 11 along with 5 other devices. I'm thinking I should move it to one of the free IRQ's. What is the easiest way to do this?

PS. I can't change the IRQ's in windows because it won't let me uncheck "use automatic settings" on the resources tab in device manager.

Also, it appears that IRQ's 2,5,7,9, and 10 are not used. Why would my computer assign 6 devices to IRQ 11 instead of using these other IRQ's?

you'll need to disable ACPI to control the irq's. MS's method is reinstall as standard PC, but you can change the driver manually and cross your fingers. in device mangler, computer, ACPI, change the driver to standard PC.

PS, MS recommends to NOT do this, but I've done it many times without fail. However if it doesn't work and is unable to rebuild the PnP tree properly, you system will not boot ever again, and ERD won't help (U'd have to manually repair/replace file structure - complicated)

good luck

Also, the irqs it shows are not technically being used that way since w2k actually assigns virtual interrupts per device.

I don't know how MS assigns IRQs, but would it do anything if you disabled it, rebooted, enabled it, and booted back up again?

Move your pci cards around, be sure to SKIP PCI 1. Also, disable com ports in bios. Tell me what pci cards you have.

Thanks for the info guys, that's the most reponses I've ever got, haha.

Badthad, I only have two PCI slots occupied: 2 D-link NICs, one in slot 4 and one in slot 5. I've got an ATI Radeon LE in the AGP slot.

The devices listed on IRQ 11 are:
D-link NIC
D-link NIC
Microsoft ACPI compliant system
Radeon DDR
Via AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM)
Via USB Universal Host Controller

Holy smokes, that's unreal! Never seen that.

I would pull the nics and see if windows moves the sound to IRQ5 or 10. Most sound systems like IRQ5. If it doesn't budge, remove it in dev mgr and let it redetect. Hopefully, it will move or give you the option to move it.

Also, why did you populate PCI 4 and 5 skipping 1,2 and 3? That's just not a good idea. After getting your sound to move. Replace the nics in PCI 2 and 3..ONE at a time between reboots.

Oh...do you have your bios set to PNP OS? You should for now.

The IRQ sharing is totally normal for W2K. Read this.

Chances are that if you disabled ACPI it would not help your "sound pops".

Personally I would update to the latest BIOS, install any new sound drivers from Epox, and check the Windows Update page for any fixes. I just checked and Epox and have the 4-in-1 drivers, the sound drivers, and the AGP drivers.

Yes, IRQ sharing is normally for ANY Windows PNP system, duh....BUT, it's NOT normally for a system to assign ALL devices to a single IRQ!!!

Dude, apparently you've never used Windows 2000 on an ACPI computer! EVERY one I have seen shows every PCI device on IRQ11, unless you set up the machine as a "standard PC" instead of ACPI.

HAHAHAHAHA...LMAO

Well, that's what I get for not reading! :D Blasted w2k!

Actually, I have w2k AS and Pro running on my servers, however, the only PCI cards are the NIC and Video adapters. Obviously, I have no problems, so I've never had to deal with IRQ conflicts/issues there.

Please excuse my ignorance and haste. :)

This is not a compaq is it? Windows likes to group a bunch of irq intensive devices on the same irq. What other devices are on that irq? Network card? video card (this may be irq 9)?

And win98 liked irq's 9 and 11.
