Sound not working

Okay, so i have a ASUS P4SD-LA motherboard with built in AC'97 audio. I originally had a HP a250n, then I added a new case and then after that alot of mods and new hardware. But ever since I installed everything into the new case my sound hasn't been working, so then I tried using an old sound card which did work but the sound quality was horrible. Also i'm running on a different harddrive now and I installed the drivers and it still doesn't work!

Can I assume that you have the mobo's chipset drivers installed? There are a lot of different problems with AC '97 audio. Mobo manufacturers don't spend a lot on their onboard stuff. I have a ASUS P4P800e Deluxe and put in a low end Soundblaster card which is much better than the onboard. Mine was breaking up. How old is the audio card you tried? Did you have XP drivers for it? Have you looked on the manufacturer's site for updated drivers? If you9 can, borrow a known good working card and try it.

Also, if your old case had a cable plugged into the motherboard's FP_AUDIO header, and now that header has nothing plugged into it, then you should put jumper caps in the positions shown in this photo. See how there's one single-pin spot, and the jumpers are on either side of that. The pic is from an EPoX motherboard, but this header is standardized, so it'll apply to your Asus too.

Where exactly would I get these mobo chipset drivers to?

They're on the CD that came with the mobo. Or go to the Asus tech support site and look for them.

The P4SD-LA is an SiS-chipped board, so you would get your motherboard chip drivers from here: link to SiS's downloads. Also, did you check the FP_AUDIO header like I mentioned? If it has neither a front-audio cable nor jumpers, you won't get sound from the onboard audio.

Okay so I went to that site and clicked on the "audio driver" tab then which one do I choose?

For an audio driver, I'd send you either to HP's own site, since it's from an off-the-shelf HP, or else to Windows Update since it's a vanilla AC97 setup. You still should have your SiS ATA and AGP/GART drivers installed regardless. Here are all of HP's drivers for your motherboard.

The FP_AUDIO header... are you saying you can't locate it? or are you saying my instructions weren't clear about what to do once you find it?

Okay so I updated my bios, downloaded those drivers from the HP site. Also I downloaded the AGP/GART driver and I installed it and then it got an error and then it said installation was successful : / So my sound still does not work.

The FP_AUDIO header should have two rows of pins. There'll be one "loner" pin without a companion. Put jumper caps on the pairs of pins to the left and the right of that "loner" pin, like shown in the photo of the EPoX board that I posted earlier.

So there aren't any jumper caps on the pins now? That causes the audio to never go to the rear ports for Microphone or Audio Out, so I think we've found one of the problems. Visit your nearest small computer-repair shop and ask if you may have a couple jumper caps, I bet they'll give you them for free or very cheap

Well I think I may ahve found the spot but I have a PCI fan card blocking it. Also On your first pick I can't tell exactly where your telling me to put the jumpers. There may be jumpers on the FP_AUDIO but I can't tell until I take the fan card out so fi you can get me a better pick of showing me what to do with the jumpers i'll get right to that. BTW thanks alot for the help you have been giving me so far.

Ok, here is a photo of the front-panel audio header without any jumpers on it:

Notice that there's one place on the row that's got just one pin. That's your reference point.

Notice that there are jumper caps on the pins to either side of that single pin now. This ensures that audio comes out on the motherboard's rear panel.
