Sound level

I just installed unbuntu linux for the first time last week. Everything works great the only weird thing is my sound level is no where near as loud as it was in windows. It seems to have the right drivers for my on board card. I have all software levels set to max in rhythmbox and in the os. My speakers are even turned all the way up. At max its about 25% percent of the volume I got in windows. Is there something I'm missing?

Sometimes the problem is the PCM level, so go to the volume control and set the PCM to 90% (too high and it becomes distorted) if it isn't already.

It was set to 90% I had already turned it up to 100%. It doesn't really sound distorted but I don't have the best speakers.
