Sound issue

InevitableTruth

One of my co-workers irritated the boss-man by not answering the phone due to listening to music. Boss-man goes and disables the sound on the computers.

Now, boss-man is gone to a different dept.

I?ve double and triple checked to make sure the mute is not on, the device is enabled, I downloaded the correct drivers (using the service tag), the volume is up, onboard sound is enabled via bios, soundmax is listed as the default playback and recording device, etc.

So i decide to email the old boss and see if i can get the fix- he simply tells me to reinstall the drivers from the Dell site. At this point, i think I'm about to go crazy as every single test I do says the device is running properly and yet no sound whatsoever.

I get sound from headphones but not even system sounds when the headphones are removed.

i've restarted 10 or more times and reinstalled the drivers multiple times (drivers obtained using the service tag).

Any help is appreciated.
I?ve even done a ->run->dxdiag (diagnostic tools with audio test tone) and still no luck.

Dell optiplex GX260 (work comp)

Soundmax integrated audio.

Since you have audio with the front jacks, I'm not sure if this will work...

Launch services.msc. Make sure Windows Audio is started. Then look for the audio service for your chip: for example, I have a SigmaTel, and a related service for the SigmaTel Audio Universal Jack configurations (see the relationship here?)...this also needs to be enabled/started.

...are the speakers by any chance connected and powered on?

I would assume everything is working properly if you get sound through your headphones from this machine.
