Sound has stopped working on my NF7-S

I got on this morning, and all sound has stopped working. In the Device manager, something called the Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device shows a conflict, and states it as "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" The Nforce drivers are all there and appear to be functioning correctly, but even in the sound tab of dxdiag there is no information, everything is blank. Based on that, i don't think it is a problem with the nforce drivers, it seems as though a windows audio driver has died and is crippling everything else. any ideas?

Have you tried re-installing the audio driver.

i have uninstalled the nforce chipset and audio drivers with driver cleaner and reinstalled them. i have tried reinstalling the item that shows the error, but its says "wizard cannot be completed...." yes, i am allowing it to connect to the internet. I'm afraid to actually uninstall the item, because i don't know any way to reinstall it. i'm stumped.

interestingly enough, that item is not in the sound controllers list in the device manager on my other computer.

Try downloading Knoppix and burn it to a CD, and see if you can get sound that way. I did that with a problem with my laptop (see link in sig) - the wireless card locks up the laptop as soon as Windows recognizes it. However, in Linux, it works just fine. So I know that the problem is with the way Windows tries to deal with the device - software issue.
Same thing here - Knoppix has a very good driver database. Chances are that it'll be able to work with your board. Now, if Knoppix gives sound, then something's amiss with your Windows setup. Otherwise, it's probably the hardware at fault.

Which nForce drivers are you using?

Uninstall anything NVIDIA in add & remove, then use driver cleaner in safe mode to remove NVIDIA and nForce chipset only. Reboot to normal mode and install the older 3.13's

i'll try and clean the slate completely, but i have been using 5.1's since the day they came out and havn't had a problem until last week...

OK, so i used DC to uninstall all nvidia stuff, everything, and reinstalled it all. it didn't work. What is the best way to do a windows repair install? I've never done it before, could someone walk me through it?

How do you perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair installation?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

I don't think anything's wrong with your nvidia drivers. I think the MS driver went south (got corrupted somehow). Try reinstalling that, see if it works.
