Sound Glitches in XP

Just picked up a new 80GB Seagate Barracuda IV 7200RPM 2MB cache HDD and I hooked it up, she's been formatted, partitioned, the works. I've done a fresh install of XP Pro Corp, got the latest drivers, updates, you name it and everything is going smoothly.

Except for my sound. I've got a SB Live! X-Gamer card and the latest drivers from Creative however, when winamp's playing music, when my PC does the slightest bit of work (ie. opening a program, closing something, etc.) my sound will get glitchy, spotty, bleepy, don't know how to explain it other than it's not smooth. I've got a 1.3GHz TBird and 256MB PC133 RAM in this beast and previously when I had XP installed I had no problems of this nature. So I don't believe it's a hardware thing...

Anyhow, any suggestions? If there's one thing I can't stand it's music that doesn't play smoothly.

Sounds like the same problem I have been having. I have been told it is a bug in the Creative Live! Series sound cards that will not be acknowledged. It picks up noise from the PCI bus. Perhaps try moving it to a different slot or try a different sound card.

:( I know it really is sad!

Hmmm... I've had XP up before (before I installed the 80GB) and with the same hardware configuration everything was running perfectly.

I've got an Abit KT7-RAID board.

Are you running your Hard Drives in RAID mode? If so, install the LATEST RAID Drivers for your board.

If you're not running RAID, get the latest chipset drivers for your board and install those. You can also try WinXP Windows Update to get the latest drivers, but usually Abit site has newer releases

Allight buddies, I've had this problem for sometime, and was considering posing the question too. Been reading up on other peoples probs. For some it works fine, so it must (imho) be a slight hardware conflict or driver conflict.

There is an update on windowsupdate.com called "windows messenger audio" update. this addresses another problem as well as the pops and clicks problem. Must admit it didnt work fully for me, but sound quality is much improved. perhaps you should try this. Also there is an creative driver update too (also on windowsupdate.com) this might help too.

Wondering off on a tangent for a mo. Did'nt there used to be a way of changing the priority applications ran at (ie, high priority and low priority). Does anyone know how to change this in XP, because the clicks are only when xp pages to disk etc, changing the priority that winamp etc runs at may also help..

Hope this helps!

The HDD is in the RAID IDE slot, but it's just running like a normal HDD, not in a RAID array.

Took your suggestion and went over to the VIA website, downloaded the latest 4in1 drivers, various IDE drivers and made sure I had all the latest updates from the Windows Update site... and still, sound glitches are still there.

I even tried moving winamp and the music to a different HDD (that hardly gets used) and still, sound glitches are present.

Hrmpff... any other ideas? I've also reinstalled winamp / sb drivers.
