Sound crackles (even with 2 different soundcards)

Ive been having some problems with the sound crackling on my system for a while.

Id been having some real problems with my Soundblaster live in both my old system (a Athlon 1Ghz, KT7) and my new system (2.53 ASUS P4PE). There was lots of slowing down (Especially with mp3's), and crackles. It got really bad last night so i pulled the SBLive out, and now im using the onboard AC97 soundmax thats on my P4PE.

Im still getting crackles, it might be my imaginiation, but it seems worse when the computers doing something, like loading up IE, or sending a file over a network.

Like i said, ive had this problem on both computers, so its not like theres a harware fault on the computers, other than the SBlive, the only audio related device ive kept on the system are the speakers themselves (which are Boston Acoustics "Digital Media Theater" using the standard analogue mini-jack connection).

Any idea what might be causing this.

Try Disabling "PCI Delay Transaction" in the BIOS, and try adjusting the PCI Latency Timer. Make sure you have DMA enabled on all HDDs and make sure you have the latest chipset drivers.

Cheers

Some motherboards have a dma switch in bios. To enable it in 95/98 right click the drive in device manager and there should be a checkbox. In 2k/XP go into device manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers -> primary or secondary -> properties -> advanced settings. Make sure it's set to DMA if available.

I cant see any mention of DMA in the tab you mentioned....

..Could there be anything else causing this problem?

Did you install the latest chipset / IDE drivers for both computers?

Also try adjusting the PCI Latency timer, as the Live is especially bandwidth hungry, and that may be causing the crackling

Cheers

Im downloading the new drivers now...

What should i change the latency to? its currently set at 32? Should it be higher or lower?

Higher settings allow all PCI devices to transact for longer periods and improves PCI bandwidth. To a point, higher is better. Try higher and lower setting and see if it makes any differences.

I'm having the exact same problem. It crackles and slowsdown, especially if I'm doing anything on the computer that's even the slightest bit cpu intensive.

As far as changing it to DMA mode. That's what I figured the problem was so I went and checked and Device 0 is in DMA mode but Device 1 is in PIO mode! I have it set to "DMA if applicable" but it just stays in PIO mode. It's a WD 60 gig HD. It SHOULD be able to go to DMA mode right?

edit: oh i have a soundblaster live as well
