sound cards

..wondering what to do about sound in a new build. I've used Turtle Beach soundcards in past builds. Anything new and improved out there that's vista ready?

I use an X-Fi in vista, because I got a Fatal1ty for cheap, and the front panel has easy access to 6.3mm mic and headphone jacks for my headset, also the SPDIF passthrough is nice. However the vista drivers are pretty meh at the moment and can crackle.

Asus is coming out with a PCIe1x sound card soon that looks quite promising, they will also have a PCI version. I would assume that that will have better vista drivers since its newer hardware.

Before you buy anything ask around about the driver situation

I have an X-Fi for when I'm using XP, but as soon as some decent cards that work in vista come out, I'll snag another (different) one.

If you do some serious recording, you need a better sound card than the built-in sound in motherboards.

..none of the Turtle Beach cards are vista ready.

And none of the creative cards work well either 😉

I think we just need to wait for more of the market to move to vista before there are decent sound cards for it.

Or if creative ever releases a good driver. :disgust:

Just bought a claro from the egg just installed it it blows my x-fi Fatal1ty pro away sound quality wise in movies and music ,have not tried a game yet also it has a built in dolby decoder, optical out and it has solid state capacitiors just sounds great oh plus ft panel header support

Personally, I have never noticed a difference. Of course, I only use 2.1 or headphones, not surround. Noat a big audiophile, so maybe that's why not. Onboard is good enough for my games.

Not since Aureal was developing their own stuff. Thanks, Creative...

edit: BTW, am I the only one that finds their name appallingly ironic?

If you can, hold off for a little while. There was a rumor about Asus having a PCI-E 1x card coming out by the end of the year with better processing than the X-Fi.

Seconded.
It's not Vista ready, is it? 😕 The specs on that page say XP is the latest OS that will support it. Maybe new drivers available that aren't listed on their site?

Oi? there are beta drivers around...

Anyways

Auzentech is doing an X-Fi

I was just going by what's on their Web site. Their site management people need to get on the ball then and update the specs page to indicate that Vista is supported and that Vista drivers are available. 😛 Right now, under specifications and "supported operating systems," the most recent is XP. On their "Downloads" page, however, yeah, Vista drivers are there.
