Sound card's SPDIF in and out, what can i use w/ it?

Hello,

I have a MOTU 828mkII 1U and ever since I have had it, the SPDIF meeter on the front keeps spiking and I hear a bit of fuzz when it does. I went into the mixer to mute it but I am wondering what things can I connect to it in the first place? The manual says I can use either a DAT machine or a sound effects processor but I am wondering what else I can use w/ it? I am thinking it may be a ground problem and having something connected to it might fix it.
