sound card

anyone recommend a good sound card that is NOT a creative card? I'm fed up with them. Lack of drivers, etc. I have a xfi fatality with the breakout box and i'm having nothing but problems with the damn thing. Random bursts of white noise when i turn on the computer, tons of goofy stuff happening when i run my POD HD500 through it and there hasn't been a driver update in about a year now. Frankly i'm just fed up with creative.

Need a card that's average at least for home recording and good for gaming. A front panel box would be nice but i can live without it i guess.

Do i even need to bother with a dedicated card anymore? I haven't tried the integrated sound cards in years maybe they are just as good now?

Really depends on what you're using for a speaker setup. If you are using a set of Logitech 2.1's or 5.1's the onboard sound is probably fine. If you are using higher end speakers, or headphones you may want a dedicated card. Asus is supposed to make pretty good sound cards. Better than the stuff Creative has been putting out...

I'd move the processing outside the computer... From what I understand with an $80 D-A converter box is better than most of the $100-$200 PCI cards out there.

They are pretty good. If you want better DACs, just get an external one that uses USB or S/PDIF.
