Looking for a sound card for my Gateway MCE, need optical digital output but looking to spend around $50. Is this one any good??

I had one, it was ok, I got the X-Fi now and there's no contest, but an Audigy 2 ZS should do it.

That would be a great card if you were going strictly digital. Since you are not, I would suggest the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS if you are gaming, and maybe a M-audio if you are not gaming
