sound card + vid card = win98se freezes

I'm rebuilding a computer with an EPOX 8KHAL in place of ECS K7S5A, but the Fortissimo 2 sound card and Visiontek GF3 Ti200 video card that were fine together before now cause win98se to freeze when both are installed. I have done a series of clean win98se installs, when I loaded latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers and nVidia 23.11's all was ok, but as soon as I load sound card drivers and restart then windows freezes while loading desktop. With a clean install even with NO Via or Nvidia drivers loaded, as soon as I install the sound card drivers windows freezes. I've tried reinstalling w/ ACPI disabled as well as manually assigning an empty IRQ to the sound cards PCI slot.

However, if I pull the sound card out and leave Geforce in, all is fine. If I replace the AGP Geforce with a Stealth 540 PCI video card and leave sound card in, all is fine. How do I get the Geforce and sound card to get along? (at different times I have tried sound card in PCI slots 5, 4, and 2).

It's probably cause by where the cards are situated. You should leave the PCI slot under the video card open, and put the sound card in the second PCI slot from the video card. But since you said that you tried that already, then I don't know what else the problem could be. Does a different sound card work?

Thanks for the replies. The drivers are the latest 1.50 from Hercules. Didn't find anything at soundsurge. Don't have another sound card available to try, but this is all hardware that worked ok together with the ecs motherboard. Clearly the bad karma combination is the EPOX board + AGP video card + Fortissiimo 2 sound card. Using a PCI video card fixes it, as does pulling the sound card out. What does that mean? I tried setting PCI latency to higher numbers, and I don't even know what that means. Someone knowledgeable please give me some advice.
