Sound card - Receiver - Speakers

I would like to improve my sound setup soon. I have 10+ year old "Sound Force 505" speakers that are stereo coming out of an X-Fi Xtreme Gamer.

My question, what is a better sound card for lossless music, and what should I look at for entry-to-mid level receiver and speakers? Thanks for your help. I would like to spend less since I am just getting into this. Thanks.

make sure you read the sticky. lots of great info, also, look through a few pages of this thread and find some other similar discussions. what is your budget?

Check out the computer audio sub-forum at Head-Fi.

Basically, a computer can act as a superb digital output, but you will probably get better sound if you use a dedicated outboard DAC with the system.
