Sound card question.

how did you find the radeon? Any good? What sort of conflict was it? Dma, or irq?

Opinions are opinions but I agree with alienwho on this. The SB Live is old and outdated. The newer cards flat out sound better. I run an AE, used to run all Creative products previous to that (SB 16, Awe64, SB 128, Live Value). I've run the AE off my DTT2500s and my big stereo, huge difference compared to SB Live. Granted my big stereo may not have cost $10000 but it's decent enough (Yamaha + Energy). With the SB Live sounded like my ears were plugged up, sounds much cleaner and smoother with the AE.

Besides it does sound like you improperly installed the XP. Perhaps you were having IRQ probs? What OS?

I found that with the xp, whilst I could change the irq and dma settings, in software and bios, which DID stop the conflict, this made it unacceptably crash prone. Has anyone else had this prob, either with sblive, or Xp?(before[sblive]enabling lpt interrupt sharing?) I.E. the system does everything perfectly, but restart🙁 When trying to restart, it would just hang. Anyone have any way of fixing that with the xp? Flawlessly? I would love to know, because it had me tearing my hair out for dayyz..Fiddled with everything that could be fiddled with...Help me out and show me where I went wrong dudes, any suggestions? Pls!!

I must say, at this point, that everyone here is probably right. Sound tastes being as infinitely varied as they are. I think all will agree, that what sounds good to one, may sound shyte to others, i.e. Virtuamike is correct in saying the sblive has a slightly muddier(I prefer, "Warmer"🙂)tone than the xp...I like this, though others may not. I like bass with very little treble, as it hurts my ears,(treble)snif, and though some may prefer the crisper(well corrected mike, sounds better than "tinny"🙂)sound of the xp..Your best bet, ultimately is to get into a situation where you can hear them all for yourself, then make up your own mind...Make sure though, that the room you hear them in is dimensionally similar to your own living area, as you may get a nasty surprise to find that when you get it home, it sounds nothing like it did in the shop, or place that you heard it. Try to avoid soundrooms, etc, as they are designed for optimal sound dynamics, and as such, sound nothing like the average living/computer room....
