It sounds good and competes very well with the SoundBlaster live if you don't need the live drive, I think the Audigy sounds just a little better but some don't, The aduigy2 is a lot better but you pay for it
I have the nforce2 motherboard from Epox 8rda+. The sound is alot better than my previous Cmedia 8738 dx-6 channel chip. The effect just sound richer and deeper with more detail. It is almost as good as Audigy which I had the chance to test out before send to my friend. But it is highly subjective and depend a lot on your preference and the speaker setup.
But technically speaking the codec on the nforce 2 motherboard can no way compare to Audigy high end codec even tho the DSP on nforce2 should be as good or better. Nforce2 motherboard builder use the least cost codec on the board and AUdigy use the highest end codec. The codec serve the purpose of tranforming digital signal to analog signal and channeling them to the apporiate output to source to your speaker. It definitely make difference when your speaker and cable is really high end. however, if you use the optical out on the A7n8x then it will be Dolby encoded digital signal and bypass the codec. in that way the sound will be as good or better.
