Sound Card for z-680

Hey guys and gals,

i'm a very lucky guy and I'm getting Logitech's z-680s for Christmas. I have an old
SB Live Platinum laying around (not the 5.1 version) and I was wondering if that would be sufficient to power these things. if not, what would be a good buy for a non audiophile who wants to take advantage of having these speakers.

Thanks,

Deucer

Hmmm...if you are not an audiophile, why are u getting z680s? Wouldn't Z5300s be sufficient for $150?

Also have you considered Z5500 as they are a better replacement for Z680s. Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 Ultra are great speakers as well.

For games, get Audigy 2 ZS or just Audigy 2. For music get M-Audio Revolution 7.1.

If you are not an audiophile, just get Logitech Z5300 and something like a Chaintech $25 soundcard with Envy-24HT chipset.

Someone is getting them for me, and they found a good deal on them (Less than $200) so I can't decide to get different ones at this point. I am really looking forward to trying them out and I was just looking for some hardware advice as to what will allow me to use their full potential. Though I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile I will appreciate these, but I don't want to break the bank on a sound card.

And I'm most concerned about sound quality on music and DVDs I play through the computer.

Thanks for the help I will check out the Audigy 2 and M-Audio.

get the z-680's. music and dvds should be good enough for the chaintech. Use the optical out for better quality on DVDs.

Why would a $25 Chaintech be better than the card I linked to and already have? Sorry, I clearly don't have the first clue about sound cards.........

The Chaintech card uses the Envy24HT audio chip, which supports 24bit resolution and 96KHz sampling rate, something that your SB Live Platinum doesn't. If you're more into music than games, then this $25 card would certainly be better.

thats fine-everyone learns at some point🙂 That SB you have is 4.1 What is the big deal? There is a difference between surround sound and just surround sound. The true 5.1 surround sound implies that every speaker has its own channel, so you aren't hearing the same thing from any two speakers. Think of it this way: In Gladiator he spins around a mace. You want to hear the mace go around you, not just the sound of the mace. Its basically directional sound.

An old Audigy 2 6.1, which was the best not long ago, would be good for about any speaker system. They're $49 at ICT company. Best bang for the buck right now IMO.
