i've been running my first generation sblive value for about 3 years now. It has gone through 2 different motherboards and it still works w/o a hitch.

However, it doesn't do justice for my klipsch 2.1s. :(

thanks for the reply
PS ..THE SOUND BLASTER LIVE value WILL work fine if you go to the higher wattage speeakers ..the 2.1's don't have the ummmmhp ..i mean horse poor even for the value....

I never had any problems with my SB Live card in the past. Perhaps it's time for a reformat ;)

Try the newer drivers as well, they seem to be giving some people better results with apps.

I think there are many many people on this forum and in general that still have some form of the Sound Blaster Live! in their systems. Try putting the card into different PCI slots, you may have to do this especially on an BX based Abit board (they made a bunch of them if i remember correctly) Certain slots share IRQs and I don't remember whether or not you can specify which IRQ to use for whichever slot.

Also if possible, clean install and try WinXP. It seems to fix a lot of problems with Win98/SE and Millennium Edition.

WELL I SAY a reformat is a cope out dude ..i.ve had my sound blaster since day one and for some reason it just once to have a mind of it's own... but i got it to work with out a reformat ..perhaps it's the via...oh but it did the same thing on my bx44400 abit chip..but my work around from the BSD.. was to edit the config sys file to recognize the emm386 device driver and then iwent to the the live were 3.0 ..that's when i got the windows pritection error ...so i deleted some crazy a...s files that some gremlin installed in my device driver which i though had something to do with the onboard sound from my albatron..dont delete the mup104 ...man the codex and the other crap was like wowwowo...so i delete that and started disabling the live ware till i found out it was the sb16 emulation driver that was causing all the hearttaches... i disabled that ..and my wifey's puter as been working fine till i get another chance to edit somethib.....my next move will be to install win xp on her puter ..........XP is the bomb

yes pukemon i agree xp does solve most of the crashes ...it just weird that i have own these cards since they were released years ago and now with out warning they have turned on me ....i have done the reformat thing many times..i love to reformat ..there's nothing like the smell of a fresh reformat in the morning air.......but at times my friend there are other solutions to progy's beside's a fresh reformat ...that windows protection error is a killer for some ..but that is easy to get around if you look in your device manager ....but what killed me was the error message that iwindows could not load VCCOM......riddle me that my friend

It might be a problem with irqs like was said cause I had an annoyance with my card in SB16 emulation mode. Sometimes the irq being used for the SB16 emulation didn't get along so well with sharing irqs.

It's not that the card wouldn't work, but when I tried to play an old dos game like Duke3d, it didn't have the right irq in the list of the game software so I couldn't get the sound to come out so I had to play around with irqs til I had one that was in the list. It was an annoyance for sure.

Your best bet though is if you don't need the SB16 emulation, then just disable it like you did. Simple.

Sound blaster live works on irq 9 and 10 i believe and the sb16 emulation driver works only on irq 5...they wil not share with any other device.............i think this card still blows away any onboard or pci sound device .......

Mine just died last month (on a reformat, too . . . it briefly "died" once before - also in a reformat but I was able to resusitate it, last year). 4 years of decent service so I can't complain and the Philips Seismic Edge that replaced it is cheap and good for my Klipsch (early 4.0) Promedias.

Goodbye SBlive! . . . it was "nice" for the years you served me . . . but . . . I won't miss you. :p

I've had 2 sound cards in the last 9 years!

An SB AWE32 from 1994 to 1999 and an SB Live value from 99 on. I'll probably get an Audigy 2 in the next year or so. Despite what peopel say about em, Creative is da bomb!

I've also had 2 in the past 8 years, the first lasted me until this year!. SB is a a great quality product!
It's rare to see computer hardware last that long!

First, I tried moving it from one PCI slot to another. Failing that I gently tapped it on the desk . . . still didn't work; so I slammed it on the desk - put it back into the computer and it worked (no idea why I even tried it after that but who can argue with "success"?). On the last reformat, NOTHING worked - so it was finally tossed like a rotten salad . . . into the can.
