Sould I buy a DUAL 1800 or wait for the new hammer/sledgehammer???

Ok here's what has happened to me in the past I have been watching the CPU monitor and have seen it peg at 100% and then have to wait for whatever to restore where the computer is normal. Now this hasn't been happening so much anymore under Windows XP. Btu now I am running a small web server and a few subdomains and I don't want the web stuff to get delayed while I'm doing other stuff. I play games ocassionally do multi-tasking and have multiple programs like virus scan in the tray and then other programs like adobe to adjust pictures and this that and the other power user stuff. Also I would like to run the cancer research stuff and possible seti also.

Should I build this up costing me 850

or should I wait for the sledge/claw hammer and is the consumer version able to do a dual processor or just the server version and what is the guestimate of the cost of the chip and motherboard???

Thanks for your input

My guess is the new CPU is going to come out of the gate costing some $$$.

Sooo....with the XP1800+ about around $120......

Up to you...wait and spend $$$ and have a really fast chip or buy now and have pretty darn fast chip now and save plenty.

I agree - personally, I would buy the xp1800/p4 now rather then spend $$$ out the gate.

Plus, time is seti/cancer work units!!! 😀 😛 😉

*burp* /coronas kicking in...😱

If you are honestly worried about what your server does, get a seperate machine to do it. You don't need all that much, even a low end duron or celeron machine would be just fine, and ensure that no matter what you are doing, your server would be just as fast 🙂

Any reason not to go with XP 1900+ chips? I notice they are just slightly higher now than the
$134 I paid for the 1800s only three weeks ago...and they're only, what, about $20 more per
chip.

TNOguy 🙂

Wait if you got the big bucks...

But if I had to do it personally, I would be on such a budget that I would have to go with the 1800s.

You aren't going to see the Sledgehammer until the very end of this year at the soonest. The next AMD price break is April 15th. I would wait until then and grab some 2000+s they should be at the sweet spot then.

Also, the thoroughbred (next generation Athlon) may work in a current dual motherboard, so you may well have an upgrade path even if you buy now.
