Yeah I played the demo at gamestop on GC. I actually liked it better on the GC controller than on X-box....
First I've heard of someone saying that. Everything I've read on this game so far (and I've read a LOT), the Gamecube controller is oft the least liked. I honestly don't think it'd be a hindrance though, so I wouldn't worry about springing for the stick yet. With anything, it just takes time to get used to after you use the standard button layout like the PS2 or XBOX (sans b&w buttons) have.

I've played SC2 on an Xbox, a ermm, early release :) The standard controller sucks for Soul calibur, it's a little too large and the other analog joystick gets in the way. It's a shame really, because SC1 plays like a dream on the dreamcast controller which really isn't that different. I own an cube and will probably get the cube version, but I think an arcade stick would be a must. While the cube controller might be slightly more playable, (i need pics to show how awkward it was) it's still not very good. I think 90% of my problem comes from playing the dreamcast version to absolute death, and it just so happens that the layout is perfect on the DC.

That said, it's a great game, but I think Spawn is cheap. He's fast and powerful, short reach but he moves so fast and combos well so it's a moot point. I do like the new moves and characters. The annoying thing about SC1 is that half your characters were different skins to the other half with maybe one or two slightly different moves. SC2 fixes it nicely and they managed to add a little more depth to the game.

I have also heard that the original XBOX controller sucks ass as well. You know, the original controller that is freaking humongous and weighs 12 pounds? But the Controller S is excellent from what I've read.

As for a comment earlier about Rock not being in SC2, you're right, he is not. But a new character, Beserker (a US exclusive along with Lizardman and Assassin), supposedly plays similar to Rock of SC1.

I also read the PS2 suffers visual slow downs during the game. I think that is one very good reason to buy it for another console if you have the option. I bought it for the GC, just wish I could plug my PS2 controller into my GC.....

I've read in several places that the GC controller is more than adequate. In fact, some say it's actually superior to either Xbox controller for this game. Everyone seems to agree that the PS2's controller is king, though.

not correct - it doesn't on my PS2 and I bought the machine on US release day (so no progessive scan mode for me)

what they MIGHT be talking about is the weird image lag at the character select screen.
kind of irritating, but it doesn't effect gameplay.

after playing for 4 hours yesterday I agree it is great and I definitely would prefer it Xbox's

since soul calibur essentially only requires 4 buttons and a D stick/pad the GC controller rocks house but i am still gonna get an arcade stick for the true experience :D

friend picked it up for GC last night and we played for a few hours. Great game! We really didn't know too many moves but figured some things out by pressing random button combos. I think it's a little awkward on the GC when you want to press X and Y at the same time or B and Y. Link is bada$$ though! I think I'm going to go with the Xbox version though. I think I'll like the controls better.

Ooooh didn't realize you needed to press two buttons at once for a good combo. But I only have a cube, so it's not like I have a choice. Off to buy it right now... will give my much appreciated opinion later.

Got it for GC. Love it... I feel bad for those who are complaining because it's no revolution to gaming like SC1 was.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!

Only downfall: damn game kept me up til 3am, getting up for work was a bitch! Oh well, that's the breaks.

<------- happy with GC controller. arcade stick seems cool, but it's no wavebird...

Got it today finally for XBOX. VERY good game. It is VERY similar to the original on the Dreamcast, but like pipster said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The graphics are nice, not revolutionary, but get the job done. Controls are great, characters are modeled very nicely, and weapon master mode is great for longevity.

If you liked the first one, I suggest picking this one up. It's not much different on the surface, but it definitely has evolved somewhat.

soul calibur (I+II) is overrated

its still good...i just think its funny how videogame mags rave over it and talk about how deep the game is and how its the best fighter ever (next to Vf4), but no one even plays it competively (e.g. tournaments and such)

There are lots of Soul Calibur tournaments. I just searched on Google and it came up with a bunch of mentions. I remember Gabe over at Penny Arcade talking about competing in an SCII tourney recently.

I got SC2(XBox). The character graphics don't look as good as I remember them in SC1. The flesh looks bad and even the costumes don't look as cool as in SC1 (Maybe I need to unlock the 'cool' costumes). What's up with the voldo 'fat ass' costume?
I'll have to plus in my DC to see if I'm remembering it correctly.
On the plus side, it's fun to play Spawn and there is the new mini-feature of weapon-select, (i's not a real weapon-select like the latest Mortal Kombat had where you could choose between 3 fighting styles.)
I'm still looking for the knockdown and first-hit tournament features. I haven't unlocked them yet - I hope they are in SC2.

if you play the weapon master mode-- they are in that. Not sure if you can unlock them for arcade mode.
