I prefer whack whack, like when you are referring to a server and don't want to say backslash, backslash, so I just say "whack whack". People are finally getting to know what I'm talking about, and using it themselves now.

I heard a answering service the other day that said "press the number sign for ...." I was amazed. Then I figured it's probably because not too many know what "pound" is.

Yeah, no. I do not use "whack whack". Sounds too much like you're masturbating violently and it only takes a couple strokes before you blurt out a long URL or directory path.

I say, "Forward slash" (No confusion about whether a backslash or a slash) or backslash.

Wow. The last people I heard using that term were old sysadmins from the 70's/early 80's era, most of which have long since retired. And as such, you'd be using the term wrong.

! = bang. Most definitely.

Maybe I learned that from someone else, but I don't ever remember learning it from anyone. I thought I coined it but assumed it was probably used by others.

Probably got mentioned in a math or programming class if you've ever taken one. It's not an official term, but a few teachers/professors I know have called it that.

I don't think they ever did. I never had any programing instructors by the time I 'coined' it. None of my math instructors have ever used it (I mentioned it to them and their general reaction was, "wtf?"). In fact, NO ONE I've ever met has used it in that way. Only online and in this exact thread have I ever found a single person who has also said that "! = bang".

To my knowledge, I've never heard anyone say it or have ever heard of anyone else ever having used the convention.

I've never worked with retired people from the 70's or 80's, so I wouldn't know if the term I've decided to use was being used the same way these retired people intended :p.

I just know that saying "whack" for backslash and slash for forward slash is a easier than "foward slash" and "backslash", and everyone knows what I'm talking about, so I'm good.

I wouldn't and many people don't use the term correctly. Forward slash and backslash are the appropriate terminologies for all situations. You can cut corners with "whack" and "slash", but it'll cost you one day.

well, aside from the obvious LMGTFY comment, it's supposed to act as keywords so you can search for different posts all with that tag. Similar to how you can add tags/keywords to your ATOT posts.

The correct action is to ignore it since they will not be using hashtags in a few years. I remember when i starting using computers and the internet. We had hash tags but they were called AOL keywords back then.

I don't mind it as much if it's used once in a message, like say someone says something and then puts a #[message] at the end, it makes it easier to group and find messages that are about the same thing. This is for brands/events/products/shows/movies/etc (i.e. #Redskins which is actually #HTTR) I think using it for anything else is dumb.
