Creamed chipped beef on toast, or as it is more affectionately known - shit on a shingle. I don't know why I was thinking about this today, but this delicacy was occasionally served up by my mother, most likely to break up the monotony of always serving edible food to her children, and I can't say these are some of the fonder memories recalled from my youth.

So, anyone else been subjected to this tasty treat that ranks right up there close to Spam? (Spam, aka Something Posing As Meat, now there's a nasty product that should be outright declared a biohazard and banned worldwide.)

i ate it in the navy

fried spam AKA Newfie steak? 😛

My friend's dad in school would make it for breakfast on the weekends. It was AWESOME. It was on biscuits instead of toast, though.

Fried spam on a toasted bagel with cream cheese is surprisingly tasty.

He still called it SOS, but all I know is it was maximum yum. He made a great country ham, too.

One of my favorites is "southern eggs benedict"

Poached eggs on biscuits, with a piece of sausage and sawmill gravy.
I like to stack hash browns on top and eat it all together.

Yummy.

I've had creamed chipped beef, and not minded it. Not often though.

My mom was a simple southern cook. Fried chicken, Fried pork chops, fried hamburgers, pot roasts, fresh vegetables, stewed beans, or black eyed peas. That's what we had most of the time, cornbread with every dinner, and iced tea (unsweetened).

Wow, I'm surprised so many have eaten this stuff. I figured there would only be a few, given the average age here. Even more surprising is that people actually like it. 😛

As for the spam lovers, there's a special place in the kitchens of hell just for you guys. 😀

It's okay, I've had it a few times in a diner for breakfast. They usually give you WAY too much and you can feel your heart valves slamming closed by the time you're done.

Of about 20 people I questioned here in the Chicago suburbs, only one had eaten sardines from a can.

I used to eat them every now and then as a kid, and don't mind them at all. They're great on crackers. People here won't eat them, and wouldn't consider trying them.... which is wierd cnosidering they're fine with tuna...

😕

I eat SOS every couple of months, I think it is good, just not too good for you.
I think every diner is bound by law to serve it. With a side of home fries- yum!

Spam is ok too, fry it up with some eggs and make a sammich!
