I'm not sure what most people do with change, but I throw it in a pretzel container and just let it build up. I've been tossing my change in it since college. Tonight I decided to sort it all out. I didn't count it up, but I did weigh it. Anyone have a guess as to how much I had? What do you do with your change?

19 pounds of quarters
11 pounds of dimes
14 pounds of nickels
18.5 pounds of pennies

As I was sorting it out I wondered if I could get someone else to do it if I said you can have it all as long as when you're done there isn't a wrong coin in any of the piles. Those dimes and pennies get tricky after awhile!

$699.21, based on the standard weights of coins.

Given wear and tear and buildup of oils and dirt, I'd say give or take $20.

19 pounds of quarters = 1520 quarters = $380
11 pounds of dimes = 2200 dimes = $220
14 pounds of nickels = 1270 nickel = $63.50
18.5 pounds of pennies = approx 3356 pennies = $33.56

I agree with this assessment.

I used to hold onto my change, but I got tired of rolling it up, so whenever I would go out somewhere, I would just throw some coins in my pocket and now I have <$1.00 in change.

I was bored so.... using wikipedia's masses for the coins, I came up with 1280 quarters, 1298 dimes, 1270 nickels, and 3357 pennies for a total of $636.87

I don't understand. You punish yourself by saving money? It'd be more effective if you had to light a dollar bill on fire everytime you swore.

You're going to spend a long time rolling those coins. Or are you just going to take it to a Ccoinstar machine and let them keep N% of it?

I think it was more married couples that had it, and then you'd spend the money on something for your spouse or something. I didn't really get it either. I guess the point is less money in my pocket.

I think most banks that have the sorting machines will do it for free. I've never belonged to a megabank, just small town banks.
