Honestly, it all stems from my hatred for harpsichords....I can't stand them...the noise...yes "noise" drives me nuts...

That and I like the dramatic nature of orchestra's.

What exactly do you hate about it? Considering that it includes quartets, quintets, etc., styles for which many of the greatest composers were known, I find that hard to believe.

To say you hate chamber music is too general and means little.

What does a harpsichord have to do with chamber music?

But yes, I agree orchestras tend to be more dramatic (if they're good, that is)

Considering much of chamber music was written by classical and romantic composers I don't really understand that. In fact, I can't remember the last time I've heard a chamber piece with the harpsichord. Care to provide an example?

Have you heard Bach's harpsichord concerti (specifically the three-harpsichord concerto), the Brandenburg concerti, etc.? Great pieces.

A harpsichord in a chamber piece would be out of place. Chamber music itself can be an incredible performance to witness. Haydn and Beethoven owned the quartet genre and produced some incredible pieces.

Meh I've played some chamber music with harpsichords, it wasn't that out of place (it's just a primitive version of a piano)

But yes, Haydn basically pioneered the string quartet, though personally I prefer (much) later composers; easier to get into when performing IMO.

Hmmmmm. He has something over 600 works and probably dozen or so that include harpsichord. I'd think you're more likely to run into the piano with Bach (that's a joke) than you are the harpsichord with Mozart. Those pieces get very little play.

Yeah, I know what the harpsichord is :)

I just don't find that it's a balanced instrument in smaller ensembles. It, by design, lacks subtley and the dynamic that you see with the later quintets, quartets, etc. which is more about the nuance of one instrument playing off another; the harpsichord dominates too much.

That's just my opinion though. I love the instrument, but I think it needs greater orchestral support.

wow...you captured the mess in my mind perfectly:D

I care about drama in pieces....crescendos not for the sake of crescendos, but for the sake of the piece.....or the story that it seems to tell:heart:

I guess I could never put it into words...
