Airhd823,
Thanks for the defense. Some U.S. citizens don't actually do anything except criticize. This is, of course, their right. If you defend the deeds and real sacrifices American troops make, expect an onslaught of typical hate filled diatribes, misapplied logic, rationalizations, analogies and demands that their skewed questions be answered immediately. An unanswered question somehow validates their e-argument. But the vast majority of dissenters don't actually do anything. Really.
Today I conducted some training in a foreign country where I've been deployed for less than a year. It's not a particularly dangerous area, just a peace keeping mission in a predominantly Muslim area. We spoke with a family that enjoys watching us train and greets us with civility and respect. We do the same. This time I took 10 minutes to show a gentleman how to tie some useful knots. His kids are awesome and hang around, sitting quietly nearby. The eldest dutifully watch over their younger siblings. I gave each of the kids a pencil. It don't think it was anything insulting to him due to his economic status, but something we're allowed to hand out. Sometimes we buy stuff or get donations from organizations because we (the U.S. Army) aren't supposed to give out the stuff the U.S. taxpayer has payed for, unless it's been specifically designated as humanitarian aid. I discussed with some other Soldiers about providing framed photos of us and their family and perhaps some good shoes for the kids. If they don't like the pictures of us, at least they can burn it for heat.
That innocuous statement will fuel someone's dissent. They will heap scorn and ridicule me, my service and my country. And I will ignore them, again. Though they have the right to free speech in the United States, many fail to exercise this right responsibly. The rule of law protects them. Some don't fully appreciate this, IMO. But today I did something and I will continue to.
To think some people will try to impact this world by typing...
Hey. Donate some good shoes and clothes. It helps.
