Well my computer kept restarting itself last night. I turn it on today and it boots to a blank screen. Then i boot it again and it says system32.dll file is missing, run windows repair.

I put the XP disk, and it says the aspi.sys (maybe acpi) file is corrupt. And i cant run a new install or the repair.

What do i do?

Id say its a virus, but i didnt download anything but music and movies on it.

Ooh, I've been there before. I believe you have a corrupt registry. Do you have any old registry settings backed up you can restore from?

dont think so. Though i did just install a new HD. I copied the files from my old HD to the new one, just never got the computer to boot from the new HD.

Well assuming you're having the same problem I had, I ultimately ended up re-installing Windows. Tho' the main reason I was forced to do that was cuz the guy who's computer I was fixing at the time couldn't remember the administrative password (he had gotten the laptop from his daughter), when I tried to use the recovery console tool.

I am by no means an expert on this, so I'm hoping someone else will chime in.

Start->Run->Regedit

Click Registry at the top, then Export Registry File. Name the file, and make sure Export Range has "All" selected.

there are recovery disks to alter the admin password without the old one...or just use a DOS boot disk with NTFSDOS and throw the SAM file to l0phtcrack for a few hours...it'll spit out the admin acct...and everything else...unless it was a really strong password.

As far as the current problem, have you tried using a network install boot disk and install off a network drive?

If you can't even install windows I'd run the Hard drive vendor's dos-based diagnostic program to check if the hard drive is failing.
If it was restarting itself previously this is very likely... try switching out the HD IDE cable also.

Does it prompt you to reboot, or does it automatically reboot? What happened in my case was that it'd automatically reboot, but right before it did, I'd see a blue screen with an error message (it was up for about 1 second). I googled the error message on that screen to determine that I was having a registry problem. Perhaps you're having a diff't prob. than I was.

UDT89, even though you are on a new HD, do you have any "system restore" points that you can fall back on?

im still booting off the origional hard drive. the new HD basically wasnt touched, meaning i wasnt saving things to it b/c i just got it.

So if i can somehow boot off the new one it should be good, just that when i change the booting HD it wont work.,

UDT89, even if you're not booting off the new HD..work w/ me here UDT89, is it installed as a slave HD perhaps, in which case every folder on the new drive now has a new drive letter? Just an idea

weird. aspi.sys shouldnt be messed up since its loaded off the xp cd. try another xp cd if theres one around. anyone think that a piece of hardware in his computer is messed up?

Is the CD in good condition? Since the console told you that it can't load that particular file, maybe the CD is scratched or smudged at that particular section of the CD where the CD-ROM can't read it. In this case you can try to clean your CD or get another XP CD From a friend, just to test it out.

Did you test the HD? There has to be a hardware problem.
If aspi wasn't loading off the CD, its just the CD, but since his system has been restarting with BSOD's recently its something more, and it sounds like a HD failure. If you have an extra HD switch it out and try starting xp off the repair disk again.
