Crews investigate fatality involving a wood chipper in Belleville

News-Democrat

Officials were investigating a fatality involving a wood chipper Friday morning in the first block of Michigan Avenue in Belleville.

Belleville police, fire and St. Clair County Coroner's personnel were on the scene shortly after 11 a.m.

There is no name on the truck indicating the company whose employee may have been killed. Police on the scene would not comment.

At the scene, a tarp covered parts of a man's body. In the back of the truck men searched through the wood chips that have been ground up by the chipper machine, which is towed behind the truck on a small trailer.

An Alton worker feeding branches into a wood chipper was killed Friday morning when he became entangled in the machine, according to police.

Richard A. Risinger, 54, of 3002 Edgewood, was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m. by a St. Clair County deputy coroner.

The Belleville Police Department received a call shortly before 10 a.m. Friday that there was a tree trimming accident in the first block of Michigan Avenue.

"Upon arrival, officers located a male subject entangled in a wood chipper that was obviously deceased," explained Det. Mark Heffernan.

Risinger died of "massive injuries from the wood chipper," said St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone.

Risinger, whose wife was on the scene working with him, became entangled in the wood chipper and went in head first, Stone said.

Risinger was one of a crew of individuals who had been hired to perform work on a resident's property at 30 West Michigan, near East Main Street.

The tree-trimming service was using a large tow-behind wood chipper, Heffernan said.

"The investigation shows that this is clearly a tragic accident," Heffernan said. "It appears that he was feeding a branch into a wood chipper at the time that he became entangled."

There was no company name on the truck.

At the scene, a tarp covered parts of a man's body.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting a fatality investigation.

"We were notified by a Belleville police officer this morning and we are investigating," said Karl Armstrong, assistant area director with OSHA.

No other workers were injured, Heffernen said.

"This was such a traumatic and sudden incident," Heffernen said. "Out of respect to the family, I don't want to release any more details."

That has to be a hell of a way to go. I am not entirely sure it would be quick. It may take tens of seconds to a couple of minutes to be run through the chipper.

Yea.. especially depending on which way you got sucked in. Arm first? Thing could chew your arm off before you lose consciousness.

Depending on the kind of chipper, a person could be turned into pulp in a matter of seconds.
I worked for a tree service many years ago, and the big chippers they had would take a 6-8 inch log, 4 foot long and process it almost instantly.

isn't this one of those things you'd do VERY carefully making sure you're not entangled/trapped somehow before putting it through? A bit puzzling as the cops try and piece it all together.

I wonder what type of college degree and/or specialized training was required to offer that opinion. Umm, ya, that bloody pulp does indeed appear to be dead. Call it.

I always wanted to get a wood chipper in my backyard. It's like a garbage disposer, for bigger objects you want to get rid of.

Reminds me of the steven king movie called the mangler. A sudden rash of grisly deaths caused by an industrial laundry press machine has become possessed by a demon.
