Hi guys,

I have read these forums for a while now, kinda lurking, never really feeling the need to post. However, now that I have a bit of free time on my hands, i'd like to know why the performance of my latest PC is so bad. The thing runs fine, games play ok (100 FPS in HL, 100+ in q3 at 1024). However my 3dmark2k1 score seems very low.
My system is:

Asus A7V133 mobo
Athlon 1Ghz running at 1.2ghz stable (42deg C constant), will run at 1.4ghz at about 48 deg C.
384meg 133mhz mem, crucial, Cas3, 1x256meg stick, 1x128meg stick.
Gf2 Pro 64mb gfx card, i forget the make, think its winfast or leadtek.
88gig RAID using onboard controller of 2xIBM GXP75 HDDs (striped).
SB LIve
21.83 Nvidia drivers (tried a lot of the 2x.xx series, dont fancy going back any lower due to newer games requireing them)
win2k +sp2
Latest 4in1s (have tried without 4in1s and just AGP driver, score is worse)

My 3dmark score is 3638. SHouldn't it be a lot higher than this? The score itself doesn't really bother me (im not one of those people that will tweak for hours to get a higher score), but the fact the system isn't performing as well as it should is irritating me.

I have tried the default test with my CPU at 1.4 and 1.2ghz, and the difference is like 100marks. I have also tried 2xAGP and 4xAGP and this makes no diference at all. If I increase the GFX card clock to about 230mhz for the core (makes sod all difference) and to about 220mhz mem (slight difference).

What do you guys think is dragging the score down here? I know if i bought a Gf3 id get an increase of about 2000, but i see no improvement game wise. My CPU is fast enough at the mo, the only thing i can think of is DDR memory or a new mobo??

Also, why the hell does win2k take so long to load on a VIA mobo? On me good old p3 800 it loaded much faster. Now the thing seems to stall on the win2k loading screen for about 15secs, then proceed to load. I made sure the system isnt checking IDE channels that have nothing on.

Cheers guys.

Dont worry about the 3dmark2001 score... if you are getting more than 100FPS in Quake3 I say your system is performing pretty well... 3dmark2001 is not an accurate benchmark anyways...

However for my GeForce 2 GTS, I find the 12.90 Detonator 3 drivers work the best for me... you might wanna check that out...

The first thing I'll say is the same as the last dude: Don't worry about your score, it's great! My friend's Radeon 64meg DDR, on a kt266 (original) motherboard only got 3300ish 3d marks.

The other thing I'll say is memory bandwidth makes all the difference in the world.

My system is based on an 8KHA and a 1000mhz/100mhz Athlon, so I basically have terrible memory bandwidth. Running stock with my Geforce3 Ti 200 overclocked slightly, I get 5733 3d marks. Once I raise my FSB to 120mhz, my score jumps to 6233 3d marks. 500 3d marks from a 20% FSB improvement.

Seems abouit right. My score with a less capable Visiontek Geforce2 GTS-V card (OC at 210/340) but running with an Athlon 1400 Tbird in a PCChips 817 LMR is 3715. ;)

I have a K7 1.33ghz/ddr 256mb ram/ 8k7a mobo/ 64ddr radeon, and I get 3363, so yours seems about right.

I agree with bcyl that 3dmark2k1 doesn't really mean squat, however FWIW your score sounds about right. My setup is as follows:

IWill KK266+R
TB 1.4 (not O/C'd)
Gainward GF2 Pro (220/440)
512MB Crucial CAS2
60GB WD 7200RPM
On-board sound (which is decent, BTW)
v4.32 4-in-1's (my system didn't seem to like anything later than that)
NVidia Ref drivers (21.83)
Win2K/SP2

Score was 4032. With WinXP Pro it's 3986.

My system:
1.4ghz(266fsb) w/ ECS sis735 mobo
512mb pc2100 ddr
15gig Maxtor 7200rpm (main) (secondary is faster but haven't reloaded os on it)
GF2 pro Gainward at its preset enhanced performance mode 222/444

my score with 21.83 was 4260
my score with 22.40 was 4520

my score with cpu fsb oc'd to 142.7 (1.5ghz) and card at 225/450 w/22.4 = 4960

I state this cause I can see that the fsb really helps and I think in my case the ddr ram is the big boost

May try the 22.40's they are refernced at my cards sites as approved....
