I use the built in firewall with no outbound filtering. I couldn't care less that Java is looking for updates, or anything like that. If you don't install random crap from the web, you won't have problems. In any case, real malware will bypass the firewall. Outbound filtering is for administrative control, not security.
wow thanks for that great comment i don't care if you couldn't care less, you prob don't have a gf / wife and kids etc using the computers. even if i didn't have kids and wife using my pc's id still want to block bs from connecting out. ya great theory don't install anything! How do you know if malware will bypass the firewall? whats real malware?
"Real malware" is something that isn't scrip kiddie crap. You know, the stuff you actually have to worry about? Also, I didn't say don't install anything. I said don't install crap. If you can't tell the difference between a useful tool, and crap; or where to get the useful tools, it would be better to just unplug your computer ;^)
Alright sport. What virus has your firewall notified you of in the past? Yea, I didn't think so. Enjoy chasing notifications for system updates and pedestrian crap....

many people don't bother with outbound filtering 'cos they say the machine has been compromised.. and malware can easily evade it..
I knew somebody that used it to stop some non-malicious software connecting out..
Even for administrative purposes.. if malware can evade it, then so can a wily user.
apparently there are tons of ways to evade them..
http://www.firewallleaktester.com/
would list which firewalls and how well they covered these.. though it didn't get technical.
I knew of a guy that had a C program which he put up that gave an example. though he was preaching to the choir.. so I doubt anybody he spoke to tested it..
Another thing they say is that the system is already compromised.. and running a firewall on a compromised system is flawed.. They probably run firewalls on systems that aren't compromised! If they're really strict, I guess they wouldn't like anti virus software running on a machine that might have a virus, so they'd remove hard drives from a compromised machine and scan from a machine that is fine!
on a family computer, a non-administrative account stops alot of malware from doing any harm. Good if it's your main home computer.
I think you may be right..in that these software firewalls do pick up alot..
but the guy that spoke against outbound filtering really wasn't being so silly..
the firewalls that check outbound can annoy people with all their prompting. I understand it gets less after a little use, but I can't be bothered with it either..
well all my keys are valid but i do like seeing when something is trying to connect out. Ive never gotten a virus and it helps when stupid toolbars are trying to be installed. i just tried the suggested firewall and it YELLS Some sort of alert (interesting sounds like Nerd alert but its very loud and 5am atm 2 lil boys sleeping) not much to it but does give a little options (almost good enough) hate to buy it to find out if it works or not hmm the free version doesnt block or allow enough choices so i guess ill see how much it costs and check other options. ANyone else have a program? kerio says 64bit support (in future) haha
