Sorry folks, but Greedo is still gonna shoot first...

Thanks (or no thanks) to the wonders of Usenet, I was able to catch the "updated" footage that George Lucas plans to release for the DVD, specifically the Han vs. Greedo scene. We know for certain that a number of scenes are once again being "tinkered" with to bring the FX/"story" up to date. Unfortunately, this scene has not been reverted back to the original scene that we all know and love.

Greedo still shoots first, but Han slightly "jumps" when Greedo shoots and then shoots him back. It's practically the same footage from the Star Wars:SE 1997 release.

If somebody wants to host the footage, I'll give it to them. It's about only 1.5 megs big.

The big deal is that Lucas can't leave a masterpiece alone. Real SW fans want the original movie. Honestly, I would like the sound updated or remixed to DD, but the video, I don't want touched. I want to see it how I remember it as a child. 🙂

You sure it's a gun and not a walkie-talkie? 😉

There goes Han's badass rep.

Next they'll at flowers to the wookie's fur and have him carry a guitar.

what's the big deal about this then?
Nobody (and I mean nobody) besides Lucas wanted to change the scene to have Greedo shoot first. Furthermore, he's supposedly again "updated" the footage, and yet it still looks awful.

If I recall, Han shot first in the original. But I'm sure that's too harsh for the 7 year old demographic Lucas is now shooting for, so he made it self-defense. Seriously, make Jar Jar a purple dinosaur and Ep1 would have been an extra long episode of Barney.

I heard the Lucas cringes at the sight of the originals. Its sad to see such an insecure film maker, who had such a hug impact on us all not be content with his work. I loved the original trilogy! Keep them around, I say!

He needs to understand that he had one one chance at a theatrical release for the original trilogy, and thats it. Re doing special effects, adding scenes here and there....its just sad and I don't get it. Lucas needs to move on...and by that I mean he needs to do something not SW related. If he really wants to write it, fine. But let someone else script it and direct it. Lucas is a visionary, and I truely beleive that...but he's no writer...and deffintly not a director.

What or who is a Greedo? Can anyone describe the scene for those of us that haven't memorized the Star Wars series line-by-line?

you know the bar scene where luke and obi-wan first meet han solo? during the scene han talks to a green alien that he kills? in the original movie the alien threatens to take him to jabba, so han kills him. lucas edited it (badly) so that instead of just threatening han the alien, greedo, fires and misses, and so then han kills him. i'd imagine the mucking around they are doing now is to make it look like greedo's blaster isn't firing crooked.

I remember the scene, but not the Greedo specifically shooting first or anything. Regardless, that sucks. It's a pity that great filmmakers like Spielberg and Lucas (ex-good filmmaker!) edit the originals nowadays.

The problem is that the Greedo edit removes much of the depth of character from Han Solo, changing him from ambivalent and mysterious rogue to strictly black and white good guy.

Fixing his blaster being crooked is cool, but I agree Han should still shoot first. The cool factor of Star Wars just wouldn't be there without Harrison Ford.

Anywho, I'm sure the Ghost pic is fake. Considering you still see an OLD Ben Kenobi, then why would you see a younger (at most 30 yr old) version of Anakin? Luke was definately in his twenties in ROTJ, and being that Anakin is twenty or so before he fathered Luke, then I highly doubt that there would be a Ghost picture of a younger Anakin next to an older ben. It just doesn't make sense. Plus; they'd have to digitally hack up the part when Luke unmasks Vader which is not only stupid but probably difficult as all hell. The reason they were able to add the Jabba scene in the first movie is because that was actually shot with the Actor that was supposed to play Jabba to begin with (when he was a human)

My three cents.

I wish you crybabies would stop talking about Lucas and the MINOR changes to the first three movies, it grows old fast.....

Also, if you don't know who Greedo is, you probably shouldn't be posting in this thread!

I think it's perfectly natural to cringe. After seeing the movie, and the footage, hundreds and hundreds of times all you see are the mistakes. The short comings. Everything that could have been but wasn't. I cringe everytime I see something I've done even though it generally gets positive feedback from people. I feel like it's old and tired, and if I could do it now I could such a better job. But you have to resist that temptation. You have to know when to let go. Obviously George doesn't know when to let go.

I agree. You should see the South Park episode called "Free Hat." Its an excellent slam on Lucas and Spielberg. 😀
