Sorry, FAQ: where is the video card OC FAQ?

I recall hearing about an article that contained a bunch of FAQs for neophyte video card overclockers -- where is it?

(apologies, I HAVE been searching for it ... 🙂

Hmm ... so I've been there before, and didn't find that much to answer my question.

So perhaps it would be useful to ask a more specific question, eh? 😱

I have a Hercules Prophet 3D Pro with 64MB of RAM. It comes with the Hercules Tweaker -- but it's crappy little interface leaves me unsure whether I'm actually doing any overclocking or not. Is there another app that allows me to dink directly with the Hercules card, without their pretty (and broken) UI?

Here are the steps I used. First, go grab the coolbits.reg file
from here coolbits.reg.
Scroll down the page until you get see the coolbits reference.
Then, make sure you are using the nVidia reference drivers. I was using
5.22, but I think anything above 5.00 works.
Once you have the reference drivers loaded, you should see a tab in
the display properties for your card (I had one called GeForce 256, and
then NV11 when I upgraded to a GF2 MX). Select that tab, and select
additional properties. With the coolbits registry hack, you should see
a tab called "hardware properties". Click that, select "enable hardware
adjustment", or whatever that check box is called. Let it reboot, and then
you can use the sliders to overclock the card.

You can apparently also get some other overclocking/bios moding utilities
here http://zoiah.m3dzone.com

HTH

So I shouldn't use the Hercules drivers, from their Web site -- I should instead use NVidia ref drivers? Hmm ... will that increase my stability or performance as well, or just make it easier to tweak?
