I'm here at the Apple Store in Lenox mall (Atlanta). I'm typing this on one of those new dual 1.25Ghz machines with two Apple Cinema displays connected to a Radeon 9000 Pro. Talk about dr00l!!! OS X.1 of course is simply beautiful. Expensive or not, Macs just make all this look good. I am still impressed.

Macs suck on a big fat 5% marketshare...

I wouldn't use a Mac if Halle Berry offered give me a hummer for 30 seconds.

Macs just make all this look good.

If there is one thing I can always say about Mac's is they DEFINITELY have the appearance factor in spades. OS, system... everything connected with a MAC just looks damn nice.

Performance/functionality is an entirely different matter.... and it all but a few exceptions I'd much prefer a PC. But even the ugliest MAC is visually a hell of a lot more appealing then any PC/Windows clone.
The Apple Cinema Display is extremely nice also, more then adequately matches up to any PC LCD available.

Two words. Lian-Li.

no way. I love my pc-65 but the g4 is *much* better both functionally and aesthetically (excluding the number of drive bays....) Take into account 10.2 and its no contest. :)

10.2!? Damn you.:p The rest of us have to wait a week before getting a chance to use it.:Q

And my obligatory Mac defense:

There's the key to a Mac right there. OS X looks nice, but you have a complete Unix subsystem under it. Don't want to touch the CLI? You don't have to. Want to get "down and dirty", go right ahead.:)

And don't forget the real measure of a computers muscle is how it runs Photoshop because everyone - graphic artist or not relies on this $600 program in their daily operations - http://www.techtv.com/products/hardware/story/0,23008,3339307,00.html

Nice piece of sarcasm!

I do not have Photoshop installed on my systems, nor do I have much of a use for it. I'm not a graphic artist, so the only thing that I occassionally use a graphics editing software for is cropping screenshots and digital photos. I'd imagine that most computer users are in the same boat that I am, and could care less how Photoshop runs on their systems.

To NFS4: Awesome post! Although, considering the screwed up guys that Hallie Berry has been with lately, I wouldn't want that hummer from her regardless of getting a Mac for it or not :)

The only thing wrong about Macs are their prices. If they are $200-500 cheaper, I would buy them in a heartbeat. Functionality, they are as as good, if not better, than any PC. But their overall value (bang per buck) is still way below a PC.

have any of you people actually had to use mac/pc back to back?

we have a new dual 1.0G w/ OS 10.1.5, everything latest and greatest at school. whimsy of the sysadmin boy. I am sorry to admit the GUI responsiveness is piss-poor. Almost as bad as other X-windowing systems I've seen (linux, HPUX, Solaris)
The mouse moves very jittery, appears really unresponsive and overall too hesitant.

Perhaps the die-hard mac/unix fans don't notice it, but I am a windows user. Though windows does not have the networking capability of X, but it damn sure is A LOT faster at drawing dislpay. If it's the FEELING the apple people talk about, Windowz has it going on. OS 10.1.5 does not. sorry.

I run a g4 and 3 AMD systems side by side at home.

I agree with you in 10.1.5. However jaguar changes that. I dont pretend to know how it works but supposedly 10.2's "quartz extreme" offloads the finder/GUI to the video card. Makes it much snappier. My g4/400 finally feels usuable as a replacement to any of my AMD machines (up to an xp1600).
